Default Food & Exercise -- 10/11/2003 -- and a running PR

I am feeling very pleased with myself because I ran on the treadmill
for 40 minutes straight today -- up 10 minutes from my previous max.
This isn't much compared to real runners, but for a 55-year-old who
hadn't run since high school (and then only when forced to) until this
past winter, I think it's pretty good :-).

Today's data:

Food:

9:00 (home): 2 poached eggs on 1 slice whole wheat toast w/ 3 slices
melted f/f cheese

12:30 (in the car): energy bar

4:00 (gym cafe, after running): package of Ritz Bitz with Cheese

8:00 (home): 208g beef tenderloin; 5 oz Brussels sprouts; 4 oz redskin
potatoes; 7 oz wine

11:00 (home): 1 cup f/f cottage cheese w/ 3 tbsp sugar-free apricot
jam

Totals: 1501 calories, 34g fat (20%), 141g carbs (38%), 114g protein
(30%)

Averages for the week: 1470 calories, 24% fat, 35% carbs, 38% protein

Exercise: 40 minutes run on treadmill (plus some shopping and
housework)

Chris, from someone of a similar age (OK, 2 years older!) this seems
more than pretty good to me - it sounds excellent. Great going!

Even when I was fit, (a couple of years ago) I couldn't stay on a treadmill
for that long. And I'm only 21. Good on ye. Stamina is something I don't
have.

Well, a lot of it is putting up with the boredom. I find it a lot
easier in some ways to do interval work, where I'm watching the clock
and changing the setting all the time.

Soon I would like to try some outdoor running, but maybe not until the
spring. I have done it a couple of times -- on trips where I didn't
have access to a gym -- and I have a lot to learn about pacing myself.

Thanks :-). I don't think any of it is as hard as giving up smoking,
from what I hear about that.

Ooh, cool! I used to love riding. I'd like to do it again sometime.
There are lots of horse places around here, but I need to investigate
to find someplace where I can go out on trails. I used to do the
whole thing with lessons and dressage and riding around in a ring
jumping over fences, but I don't see getting into that again right
now.

That is more then I could do at this time! Congrats! Is your treadmill in
front of the TV? I saw another post in this thread when you mentioned the
boredom....
