Is the Adkins diet healthy?
http://www.atkinsexposed.org/atkins/1/Atkins.htm
At least with my lowfat, vegetarian diet, nobody is telling me it is dangerous. The most they can come up with is that it is boring, or they try to make the argument about those "good fats". dkw |

Their vegan motivations are not exactly a mystery - They don't care about choice they just want to trick everyone into going vegan and they are happy to lie to work to that end. Compare with your open motivations and willingness to admit other ways work. |

Could be, although they didn't seem to offer an alternative such as vegan on this website. I can't be certain all those organizations are against Atkins diet, but if they were, I would take it to heart. Actually, I already am convinced it is a way to lose weight when followed exactly as recommended, but that it is probably not as healthy as some alternatives for lots of the population. Hopefully, time will tell. If I loved meat and fat and didn't care so much for carbs, I might even be tempted to try it if I were overweight. I would really be hesitant to try Atkins if there were a history of heart trouble in my genes though. It appears to me that like many diets, diet books and claims, Atkins overstates the good and understates the bad. That's how they sell books...by getting people to buy into their claims and telling them it is OK to eat more, or lots of certain foods that they know people want, even if it isn't exactly accurate or complete. Still, if the diet were really bad, I think the short term studies would already have shown that, so perhaps it is OK....just not for me. dkw |

Evolution (or design, pick and choose) has built it around non-specifics. Why people think a very unbalanced, very specific diet would ever be a good solution is totally beyond me. Not just Atkins. I'm talking about people that swear off food X or group Y and/or only eat A. Even if supplemented (like a lot of veggies do to make sure they get their protein etc.), it just seems so...unnatural. And partially inconvenient. But I digress. I won't touch Atkins because my brother tried it and developed diverticulitis. He's been in and out of the hospital for 5 years now with digestive problems. I don't necessarily blame Atkins, but it sounds like a really crappy way to diet, and I don't want to do it. To each their [possibly insane] own? |
