Default Stevia - This is a joke, isn't it?

After reading about the apparently marvelous sweetening capabilities of this
herb on this NG, I found some today (50 grams for about 8 USD) at the local
health food store.
They only had the powder form and the packaging recommends half a
teaspoonful in a cup of tea, which I duly tried.
If you like a green scum on your tea and a green sludge in the bottom of the
cup, together with the process of filtering the powder through your teeth as
you drink and the weird, not very sweet taste then powdered Stevia is for
you - and you are welcome to it!
Sadly disappointed!

One thought - could I soak the powder in boiling water and then filter it
through a coffee filter to make a sweetening liquid?
If so, anyone any idea how much water to use?

Those who like and use stevia regularly seem to agree that the refined
white powder is the best choice. With a "green scum" I'm guessing you
got the less refined herb. I don't care for it myself, in any form,
but tastes vary, so perhaps the white powder form will be to your
liking.

Take care,
Carmen

Thanks, Carmen. Unfortunately, health food stores are still few and far
between in Belgium. In this one, I had to ask for the Stevia and it was
under the counter. This was the only type they had.

I will try elsewhere.

Brian, VitaCost will ship internationally and they have had good
prices in comparison shopping for other health/diet related products.
They do ship internationally. CHeck their shipping policy for a
special phoen ## for international orders.

They have liquid stevia as well as multiple powders from different
manufacturers.

Brian,

I recommend you try Sweat Leaf brand (Stevia plus fiber) or Stevita
(Stevia Supreme). These come in packets, are white, and mix just like
sugar/sweetener. Neither of the are green or have the 'green' taste.
Stevia is known for having a liquorice type aftertaste, but in these
two brands I dont even taste that.

Stevita even makes its own brand of 'koolaid' and hot chocolate milk,
using stevia as its sweetner.

Hee hee. Sorry to laugh, but that is quite the description.

I use a liquid stevia and I quite like it. However, even so,
I like to mix a drop of stevia and a drop of sucaryl in my tea
(when I have it sweetened), because that seems to give a
flavour closer to sugar to my tastebuds.

If you can find a liquid (clear), I would recommend it. Thanks
for the description about the powder; I was thinking of trying
some, but I think now I'll pass.

April.
