So, diabetes only strikes fat people eh? NOT

Jenny wrote: I became a type II diabetic long before I had a weight problem, developed the weight problem as a result of blood sugar swing-induced hunger, lost the weight, stayed diabetic, and am currently at a normal BMI and body fat level and still diabetic. The first time I was diagnosed with "prediabetes" on a glucose tolerance test I weighted 108 lbs. Lots of people do become diabetic because of overweight, but some of us have genetic problems that cause the syndrome too. It's my understanding that some research is indicating that gaining weight is probably an effect of the whole process of becoming a non-insulin-dependent diabetic. Like Parkinson's, it's thought that a significant amount of the progression happens before there are any symptoms and may take 20+ years before symptoms show up. In fact, some doctors are starting to treat patients who combine weight gain with hypoglycemia as pre-diabetic even if they can pass a glucose tolerance test in hopes of preventing or slowing down the progression to diabetes. Hi Jenny, I wasn't overweight until after being diagnosed with diabetes 10 years ago and put on a "diabetic diet", very high carb, 3-5 fruits per day, plenty of pasta, bread and very little meat, no eggs, fake cream, etc. I gained a bunch of weight on this diet and ended up on insulin! Sheesh, not a good diet for me, what a mess!! The low carb WOE has helped me lose some of that weight but the best feature is controlling my diabetes. HA! The first time I dieted, I got the ADA exchanges diet and initiated a round of yo-yo dieting that left me much, much fatter than when I started. I've heard the diet has changed in recent years (which is a good thing). Shirley to reply via e-mail remove the trees from my address |

My doc has muttered something along the lines of nobody really being sure which comes first, PCOS or insulin resistance or weight ... I read a long but fascinating article about insulin on the lowcarbresearch.org website a month or so ago. Unfortunately I can't for the life of me find it again, but it was broken into about 4 documents because it was so long. But it went into all the different things that insulin affects or is responsible for, and it was quite amazing just how many things are influenced by insulin in one way or another.
