Default inulin/chicory root fiber?

I have been buying different low carb breads looking for one that gives
optimum nutrition and taste. I tried Franz low carb bread, and was
surprised that it was almost as white as regular white bread, and as soft as
wonder bread. But it claimed 60 calories per slice, 6g of fiber, 5g of
protein, and only 1g of fat. This bread doesn't look like the typical high
fiber bread. But the fiber source is inulin aka chicory root. What the
heck is it? I've done some searches, and most of them are commercial sites
selling something. Is it as good as eating fiber from whole wheat?

inulin is found in a lot of vegetables.

I've seen it added to yogurt to add fiber. Stoneyfield has it in it, I
think.

Apparently it does, as this link shows. Beware, though, it's a marketing
link, so, YMMV.

I have read that some people are allergic to it.
