Default Hello, I'm new and thinking about starting

Hello eveyone,

I am a 28 year old woman who is overweight. I am about 5'2" and
weigh close to 200 (I feel very embarressed). I have an 8 year old
girl and 11 year old boy. I overeat and select poor choices. I have
always ate this way. Now I keep getting bigger every year and I need
to do something.

A few of my coworkers have started wieight watchers and they have lost
weight. I feel it is time for me to start. Can anyone offer advice
and comments? I have absolutely no will power. Most people eat to
live. I live to eat. I look forward to eating and my mood changes
when I am hungry.

I have Hypothyroidism and I know that makes it harder. Sorry this is
so long!

Thx
Steph

Welcome to the group you will like it here. It seems from reading your post
you already know where your problem areas are, that is a big headstart on
most people, You have also identified the reason for losing beyond yourself,
You are embarrassed and want to look better and feel better but, you have
two children you are teaching how to eat, what do you want them to learn, I
have lost about 85 pounds in the last year and a little you can do it if you
work the program and are patient with yourself, in the end it is all in your
control, what you want and are willing to do to get it are the determiner of
the results, whatever you decide, best of luck and let us know what you
decide, Lee

Hi Steph:

Welcome to the ng!! WW is a good program, I've lost almost 40 lbs on it
and have been able to eat everything I ate before (just in smaller
quantities). I've also changed my eating habits to be more healthy. The
kids are getting used to the healthier foods (8 yo boy and 10 yo boy).
You don't have to get any hungrier on WW than you do normally. There are
lots of low-point foods that you can eat!

Default Hello, I'm new and thinking about starting

Welcome Steph! Admitting to yourself and others is a great first step.
Congratulations. You've already identified several factors that have
contributed to your weight gain. Knowing what your issues are, what
your trigger points are, can really make it easier because you know
where to focus your attention.

WW can help you learn to make better choices without sacrificing
quantity or feeling deprived. For me, it's a way of eating that I know
I can live with for the rest of my life.

Keep reading here, and posting when you can, whether or not you're
ready to start WW yourself. Hearing what other people are experiencing
may help you decide your next step.

Good luck making your decision.

Default Hello, I'm new and thinking about starting

Hi Steph! One of the most important things when deciding to lose weight is
the decision. Make sure you're doing it for the right reasons, and that you
are committed to the journey. Meanwhile, to help you along, here's the
welcome notice:

Welcome to this great newsgroup where you'll receive lots of support,
advice, and encouragement. Once a week on Sundays, I post a list of links
that newcomers to asdww might find useful. You may want to look for that
later in the week, or do a backwards search for last Sunday's post.

In the meantime, here's our FAQ:
http://www.didian.com/asdww/
our welcome notice:
http://www.geocities.com/welcomenotice/index.html

Frequently seen acronyms on this NG:
NSV = Non-Scale Victory
WOE = Way of Eating
WOL = Way of Life (Living)
OP = on Points or On Program
DH = Dear or Darling Husband
DS/DD/DGD/etc = Dear or Darling Son, Daughter, Granddaughter, etc
WI = Weigh-in

Amberle3's Challenges:

THTP - Take Heart, Take Part Exercise Challenge:
http://www.angelfire.com/me4/travelgirl/thtp.htm

RafL - Resolutions are for Losers Weight Loss Challenge:
http://www.angelfire.com/me4/travelgirl/rafl.htm

Other acronyms:
http://www.wwlissa.com/dwlz100+/100+acronyms.htm

Here's a short synopsis of the USA program by Joyce -

How many points you can eat is only based on your current weight, as you
lose
weight those points allowed will decrease (logic is that your body will need
less
to operate). At 183 pounds and based on the new US flexpoints system, you
will
have a set point target of 24. In addition to this you are allowed 35
flexpoints
to be used throughout the week ... as well as any activity points you earn
on a
particular day. When your weight drops to 175, your target drops to 22
points ...
weight reaches 150, target once again drop to 20 points. 3 servings of
dairy of
recommended per day, 5 servings of fruit and veggies, minimum of 6 glasses
of
water.

To calculate food and activity points, I love this computer desktop
calculator ...
http://www.zythra.com/downloads/points.exe

The basic plan is easy. Eat at least your minimum daily number of points.
Points
do not carry over from day to day. You are allotted 35 weekly flexpoints to
be
used at your discretion ... can divide them up and use daily (would be an
additional 5 points per day) or save them and use them for a special
occassion
during the week. Activity points are earned based when exercising, but can
ONLY
be used on the day they are earned.

If you can afford $15/month, the online ww program might be a great thing
for you
to look into. There is lots of information available, as well as the food
point
database and journaling system.

Joyce
WW starting weight: 228.8 - 2/5/02
current weight: 133.3
Lifetime: 4/4/03

Please note that if you live in onther countries (UK, Australia, NZ,
Europe), the Points plans are different. The UK and Australia/NZ calculate
points based on saturated fat and total kilojoules. Most of Europe
calculates based on total fat and total kilojoules. The desktop calculator
above can handle all of these programs.

Disclaimer: As an unmoderated Usenet newsgroup, asdww is unusual in that
most of the people who participate are respectful, considerate folks who
freely share their experience with and knowledge of WW, weight loss, and
maintenance. Yet occasionally, spammers, trolls, and flamers show up to post
advertising, false information, insults, and the like. Nearly all of the
time, people like this are just trying to yank someone's chain. Most of the
regulars on this newsgroup offer their experience as a suggestion to try if
you're stuck, but are quick to advise that each person has to find what
works for him/herself. If someone posts something that doesn't sound right
to you, ask the newsgroup, ask your WW leader, or ask your health
professional.

Much success on your weight loss journey! WW works!

Default Hello, I'm new and thinking about starting

Okay!!! Definitely start. You sound like you have the right mind set
and want it. No change of life (eating or whatever) will ever work
unless you truly want it. Now that you want it go to a meeting. You'll
feel like everyone is staring at you when you walk in (I know I
did)...but it isn't true. Try to remember that EVERY SINGLE PERSON in
that room no matter what they look like has the same problem as
you...overeating. This is a room FULL of people struggling with the
EXACT same problem you have. What better place to go to to NOT feel
embarassed and feel acceptance. What's more these people will become a
support system, a source of encouragement, and a shoulder to cry on
when you're struggling. Wait until the first time you announce a loss
and those people clap for you. You will feel wonderful and come to
look forward to meetings. Make sure you find a leader who inspires
you. Go to different days/times until you find one that clicks. A good
leader that inspires you is key. Going to meetings is key. No matter
what that scale says every week think of it as a tool. It is a guage
that helps you determine how you did the previous week. Not an enemy,
but a tool.

WW will teach you how and what to eat and here in the US will teach
you the points system. Points are brilliant and are so easy to use to
determine exactly what you are putting in your mouth and how much. Now
for will power. The biggest thing you can to do help is get the crap
out of the house. If it isn't there you won't eat it! You can do this.
And it will be easier than you think to do. Because unlike almost
every other weight loss plan out there WW let's you eat what you want,
when you want it, within moderation. You can still have a slice of
cake and go out to eat as long as you keep track of those points and
make wise choices. I KNOW you can do it. GO to a meeting and come
here. You have weekly support with the meetings and 24/7 support with
us!

Last of all, part of your tools from WW is a food tracking journal.
Write down EVERYTHING you eat. You'll be amazed at how much this
helps. For you it sounds like eating might have an emotional
tie...also write down in that journal what drives you to eat, what
mood you were in when you ate, and if you were truly hungry when you
ate. This will give you some patterns as to why you eat when you do
and for what reason. And don't forget water...the more you drink the
more weight you will lose and the healthier you will be. It's easy to
forget the water!!!

So get out there and go. I know you can do it and we all here will be
so proud of you when you report back that you made the first
step...and then the second, and so on!!!

Default Hello, I'm new and thinking about starting

Great post MelissaInNJ.
Steph, welcome to the group.
Don't think of it as a diet, just a change in eating habits. I started
marking the outside of the products I buy with the point values so every
time I reach for something I can know right away how many points I am using.
Sometimes I put it back.
Hope you decide to start your weight loss journey.
