I gather that the purpose of the staples is to hold the bag closed so
that
the popcorn does not go shooting out of the bag all over your
microwave. As
to whether it tastes better with or without butter, that is entirely a
matter of personal taste.

But the real reason I am responding here is to express my sense of wonder
that the man who dogmatically informed me that grapefruit may not be a
part
of any low carb eating plan is apparently condoning the consumption of
popcorn!

I never said that grapefruit isn't part of a low carb eating plan. What I
said was that grapefruit gave me (and gives me) a blood sugar rush. You,
if I remember correctly, were adamant that the GI (which is low for
grapefruit) was the end-all and be-all of determining whether something
can be eaten on a low carb diet or not. I respectfully think the GI is a
neat tool but you still have to listen to your body. If eating grapefruit
causes a blood sugar rush (as it does for me), then you shouldn't eat it.
Whether you choose to eat grapefruit is up to you. Moreover, I've not had
popcorn in at least a year. As I'm currently biking 100 miles a week and
lifting weights twice a week, I think that I can afford a minor splurge
into popcorn. According to:
http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcom...st_nut_edit.pl
One cup of popped popcorn has 128 calories and 4 grams effective (total -
fiber) carbs. I think I'll have about 2-3 cups (I'm not sure, as I've
never made it).

Grapefruit, on the other hand, one-half of a 3 and 3/4 inch fruit has 109
calories and 12 grams of effective carbs. That means I can eat 3 cups of
popped popcorn for 1/2 of one grapefruit. (And who eats half a
grapefruit?) Moreover, I'll be adding butter to my popcorn. While this
increases calories, it'll decrease the GI of the food. Now, grapefruit
has a lower GI than popcorn, but popcorn has never given me a blood sugar
rush while grapefruit has.

You can't. We had some dishes once that had a decorative trim which

we
thought was painted on. Turned out it wasn't metallic paint, it was
actually a thin band of metal. When we used one in the microwave,

it
caught fire _and_ it sent sparks shooting around inside the

microwave
like
those ball thingies in science museums that you can touch and they

make
your hair stand on end.

NO, NO, NO. The staples are smaller than the wavelength of the
microwaves; therefore, the microwaves don't "see" the metal. The
decorative was "gigantic" relative to the wavelength of the

microwaves.
Seriously. You can do this. Next time I do it, I'll take pictures.

I think it may also be a problem with older microwaves that has been
resolved in the newer ones.

Well, I'm glad I didn't take Bob's advice and go try it, because I don't
want to ruin my perfectly good, working microwave, even if it is old.

Even with old micros, it'll work. I'm serious! The wavelength of the
staples is smaller than the wavelength of the microwaves. There's this
thing called "physics" that describes this phenomenon. ;-)

No worries - I was talking about marengo. It was his post I responded
to, and it was he who called me to the carpet for including fruit in
what I nevertheless dared to consider a low carb diet, on the GERD
thread.

You are confusing me with someone else. I don't think I've ever taken
a position about GI on this newsgroup - certainly not an adamant one.
I don't know much about GI and at any rate I certainly wouldn't be
making proclamations about whether anyone *should* eat anything.
Dogma is just not my style.

Enjoy the popcorn!

you add the butter later. the staples are to prevent the bag from opening
and spilling popcorn everywhere.

Has anyone tried taping the bag - that would eliminate the fear of sparks
flying from the staples. Only thing I don't know is if the adhesive on the
tape would get hot and start to melt and open the bag - haven't tested the
theory - only asked the question.
