Default A night at the Chinese buffet

My son complained that we haven't been to the local Chinese buffet since I
started Atkins in December. OK, I know I'll find enough LC options to keep
me happy, and controlling portions isn't as much as of a issue anymore, so
we went..

First off, I was more excited about the garden flowers I had gotten at
Kmart 5 minutes before that what was to eat at the restaurant.
I ate every thing on my plate, but all "legal stuff". I stayed away from
all of the sauces and breaded items. Best item was the fresh strawberries
for dessert.

I have to confess that I find myself becoming opinionated about how other
people are stuffing their face. I'm trying not to be, and I'd never
badmouth someone about there weight problem- but we have a lot of very large
people out there-- I hate to see obesity hurt their health.

I guess I'll just keep setting an example, Don't skip meals and stay in
control- it isn't your last meal and it isn't mandatory that you eat $10
worth of food.

What is there to eat at a Chinese buffet? The few times I've attempted to
eat Chinese food on Atkins it always came down to the same thing: steamed
broccoli and beef. And I usually have to send it back a few times until they
actually make it without any of their sauces.

Black pepper chicken, broccoli & chicken, beef strips with peppers and
onions, teriyaki, sauted mushrooms, stirfried green beans. It's not all
fried rice, lo mein and eggrolls!

I went to one tonight myself.

I think that word of mouth is the best advertising for low carb, friends can
see your success, you tell them how it's done, they try it and pass it on to
their friends.

Black pepper chicken - I wouldn't order it without knowing the actual carbs
because it is very like coated with a sauce containing sugar.

Broccoli and chicken - again, you have to be very careful of carb-laden
sauces. I find I need to send things back several times until they get the
point. As far as the stuff in a buffet goes - how do you know how many carbs
there are?

Beef strips with pepper and onions - onions are not very low carb. And
again, you really need to know what kind of sauces they use.

Teriyaki - Teriyaki? First of all, teriyaki is Japanese (I live in Tokyo, so
I know! ). Second of all, the entire BASE of teriyaki sauce is SUGAR!
Teriyaki *anything* is way out of bounds on a low-carb diet!

Sauteed mushrooms - again, sauteed in what? If you don't know for sure they
didn't use sugar in the sauce (very likely) how do you know how many carbs
there are?

Stirfried green beens - again - what is the sauce?

It's not a no carb diet. The amount of sauce you eat is pretty small. I
had Bento at a Japanese restaurant last Monday and looked things up when I
got home and was surprised how low the carb count was even though I had two
shrimp and some veggies with tempura and a few pieces of teriyaki beef. I
even ate the fruit for dessert, a couple pieces each of pineapple, orange,
melon and strawberries and figured the whole thing at 40 carbs, 2 fiber--the
fruit was 11 so it would have been easy to stay under 30. Not something I
would do every day but not outrageous for a treat. I had originally thought
I would just let myself go carb crazy for the first time since last June but
was really surprised how little it was when I added it up. I generally aim
for 35-45 g carb/day and hit 60 that day.

We need to distinguish between Japanese and Chinese food. They are very very
different. There are lots of low-carb Japanese dishes which are also,
simultaneously, low-calorie.

All I'm saying is that reasonable caution is called for. For example, don't
you want to know if the sauces in the Chinese buffet contain sugar or flour?

How can you estimate the carbs in a case like that? I think it's impossible
without actually knowing what is in the foods.

I usually go for the boiled shrimp and the crab legs.
