Well.. I guess your vague assertions that iron would at most cause
constipation makes you the resident expert on the topic.
And as for Roos, whomever that is, I think you have me confused with
that person.
Perhaps you could explain the part iron plays in heart attacks, to
name but one aspect of the potential problems?

Use your newfound google skill and read up on it, rather than simply
bloviate.

Congratulations.
Going from "newbie" to "tiresome" in the space of a single day is a
*special* skill.

ah, good eye Carmen. it's a fairly good imitation, i must say!

I already got plonked though. The guy has no staying power

I don't think so -- it just helps you get it up, but once you're done,
you're pretty much done.

You're right. I amend that "pill" to "lotion". ;-)

Whoever it is has read up on Roose, since it spelled the name with a
very old variant not seen for some years.

Yup, looks like he probably found the FAQ and glanced at it at least.
I got curious (as I do whenever someone draws undue attention to
themself) and found out he's a wart on the buttocks of sci.physics
named Mike Varney. He disappeared from that group back in May and
when he returned he was using a pseudonym. He wanted to remain
unrecognized. That is no longer a valid possibility. ;-)

Take care,
Carmen

Hi,

I was reading in the Atkins book that you shouldn't take a supplement
with Iron in it. Why is this? I just bought Centrum and have been

harm, or will it?

at worst, it may constipate you.

About 1 in 200 people, especially those of northern European descent,
have a genetic predisposition to store too much iron. This is called
hemochromatosis, and the excess iron must be removed by removing blood
(like blood donation) very frequently. Hemochromatosis can also be
acquired by excess iron supplements.

Most of us will ingest more than ample iron from our protein sources,
and should try to avoid adding iron in supplements. There are also
theories currently under scientific investigation that excess iron is
involved in both heart disease and cancer.

That said, one bottle of Centrum probably won't do you any significant
harm, but look for Centrum Silver next time - same formula without the
iron.

Let me add the caution that individuals vary, and IF you have data
that pertains to YOU it should be used in place of the more general
guidelines intended for the population as a whole.

I've donated a lot of blood in my life - around 100 units. I've also
been borderline anemic most of this time, something pretty rare for
men (not so rare for women). They test your blood for iron content
when you donate, and I have been deferred a few times because the
reading was too low. So it makes sense for ME to take a small daily
amount of iron (such as in a multivitamin with iron) because that
helps push me into the "normal" range, not into the "too high" range.
I also know people who require the more heavy-duty "stand-alone" iron
supplements to keep in the proper range to donate.

So if you have doubts - you could do far worse than donating blood and
getting a free evaluation for this factor. Donations tend to drop
around the holidays (people are too busy), yet increased holiday
travel usually means an increased demand because of road accidents.
And since one test isn't as reliable as many tests, donate several
times (you are eligible every 8 weeks) to be sure! g
