MY GOAL: By June 17, 2004, I'd like to loose 30 lbs. and
weigh in at 227.

Heh. I'm really starting to sound like a curmudgeon, but I
don't like it.

The problem with setting a goal 6 months out is that people
too easily get discouraged when they realize they aren't
going to make it (which they realize by projecting out their
current loss rate.)

Fact is, it takes time to work out the kinks. But no matter
HOW long it takes, it's worth working on having new diet and
exercise habits be a way of life.

What I *REALLY* hate is when someone says, "I started
exercising and eating right and it didn't work for me." So
they quit. Um, how 'bout try again? I mean, really, is
anything ELSE supposed to work?

So, instead of just knocking you about, how about you set a
goal for this week to drink 8 glasses of water every day and
exercise three times. Can you do that?

Dally

Thanks for colaterally helping me! I got up this morning, got
myself a gun, no wait, I got on the scale and...242. Doh! The
same as last week, despite about 10 miles walking and eating
(mostly) healthy. Then I thought, measure something. When I
measured my stomach, I discovered that I'd lost an inch. Which
reminded me about Covert Bailey's advice to just keep doing it
in order to train your body to get used to it and make the
necessary adjustments.

I message I remember from a very bright guy I knew from OA
years ago: You start over every day.

I'm going to rain on your parade a little bit. Are you sure
that you stood the exact same way and didn't hold your stomach
in and didn't pull the tape tighter than when you originally
measured. An inch is a lot to lose in a week unless you were
bloated from a lot of water weight (then the loss should have
shown up on the scale). I know that sometimes we want progress
so bad that we fool ourselves not intending too. Then when we
measure the next time and do it differently then the measurement
is not as excellent as before so we get discouraged and go out
an eat a big whomping piece of cheesecake because if being good
doesn't help, then nothing will work and it doesn't matter if
you have a 700 calorie snack. Remember to keep going no matter
what.

Well, I have an umbrella. The actual difference was 1.5 inches,
but I threw in a "will to believe" factor and deducted the .5. My
belt is also telling me that I lost it.

I'll weigh in again tomorrow, because my weight fluctuates 2-4
pounds per day. If I had any money, I'd also replace the scale,
which is 20 years old.

Wuhoo! I started at 244 and took measurements nearly every week
when I did my official weigh-in. It was an excellent way to get
some positive feedback. Sometimes my weight would actually be
UP by *some* measurement would be down and that would give me
the hope I needed.

I've been keeping a record at www.bfltracker.com (my profile is
named Dally) and each week the changes are miniscule (or in the
wrong direction!) but over time the trend is clear.

Which reminded me
about Covert Bailey's advice to just keep doing it in order to

To become a "better butter burner". Yup. It works. I used to
be insulin resistant and I no longer am. I've really improved
my body at a cellular level through my exercise regimen. (Three
days cardio, three days weight-lifting, one day rest.)

I message I remember from a very bright guy I knew from OA
years ago: You start over every day.

Yup. Thank God for that, too! (I can't improve my past, but I
can always improve my future.)

I forgot about "better butter burner!" I do remember "release the
grease."

I'd actually do more excercise, but with chronic back spasms, I
have to be somewhat cautious. Even after 2 miles yesterday, I had
to fight off a spasm. I'm down for two weeks, then crooked for
another month after a spasm episode, and this is the worst time of
the year. So, slow and steady will do for me.

And being male.

I'd like to ask, how does being male help? It's not that I disagree,
necessarily, but I would like to hear why you think males lose weight
more easily.

Then there's the whole estrogen thing that holds onto fat and causes
women to burn muscle more easily than accessing fat stores. Which of
course reduces the basal metabolic rate even more. Men are better at
getting at fat.

Don't forget the fun of water retention/bloating and PMS which serve to not
only mess with your waistline but with your head too.

I know My husband and I are suppose to be losing weight together. He

decided
to wait because he knows he will reach his goal weight before I will. But
the funny thing is he will probably gain his back before me. Oh yeah my

name
is TJ and I am new to the group. I have decided to lose the weight now
because I do want one more child, but I do not want to become pregnant at
this current weight. (I currently have 5 kids, I am a gluten for

punishment)
