Default I saw a fat guy on a bike, not a scooter!

On my way back from the gym this morning I saw a rather overweight guy
riding his bike, leaving a grocery store parking lot, with his grocery bags
in the bike basket. On the one hand I thought "Good on you dude, for
getting out there and burning those calories!" but on the other hand I
thought "What the hell are you doing riding a bike on a busy road with no
helmet, moron!"

I have only 3 flaws. My first flaw is thinking that I only have 3 flaws.

Hmmm, I really don't like people with this kind of attitude towards
cyclists. Cyclists have every bit the right to be on the road as stupid
cars...or should I say SUV's since I live in the states and that is what
everyone drives. As far as him not wearing a helmet, that is his business.
I wear one, but I like to think we live in a free country, although we
really don't in many ways.

JMHO,
Curt

I get beeped at and yelled at and have stuff thrown at me, all because I
ride on the road, don't impede traffic, and basically keep to myself.
And, I typically have this happen to me at 5:30 in the am, when there's no
one else on the road anyway!

It may be his right but it IS stupid. I have a daughter who wouldn't be
alive today if she didn't wear her helmet while riding.

Surely you realize he has a right to use the road too, don't you? Bikes are
low impact, so are a good way for overweight people to exercise. Also,
helmets are nice to look at and can help you not lose some skin under the
right kinds of spills, but if you take a serious crash with a one-ton or
more car and/or land on or have a serious head impact, that helmet ain't
gonna do ****.

Now you have me wondering which of the two of you is the moron..... :0

Roger, a helmet won't protect you from every possible harm, but they sure
can help. My daughter was riding a few years ago and took a spill, hitting
her head on the road. Without her helmet she would have either been dead or
severely brain injured. Closed head brain injuries are extremely difficult
not just for the injured but their whole family. I would say that heavy
traffic or not anyone riding on the road without a helmet is not too bright
and asking to be even less so.

Bob, that is so sad really. I would have thought CT wouldn't be so bad,
being that the education level in that state is pretty high. I guess, it is
just an aggressive area, like NJ (around NYC) now. What a shame. So far, I
haven't run into too much crap here in Pittsburgh. I have some idiots, but
all in all it has been okay so far. I am sure I will have some encounters
now and again. I do have a bit of a temper, so I hope I don't catch any of
them. It could get ugly for me or the person that was an ass.

Oh well, this is a very aggressive country and one of the scariest things is
cell phones for a cyclist.

You would find it easy to believe if you saw the helmet she was wearing.

I'm aware of that....

How do you know? You realize that the helmet takes up room around the
head...so if you're wearing it and you hit your head, you might have just
hit the helmet....

You can conjecture, but you can't be certain.

All that said, i was sure glad I had my helmet when I went down last
Saturday. My helmet hit the pavement twice, once on each spill. That
doesn't mean that wearing the helmet saved my life....but it certainly might
have saved me from getting a headache, a knot, or losing some skin and hair.
Who knows....

Well, there are plenty of people who ride regularly who would disagree with
you. That big piece of Styrofoam just can't do much to protect a head
except in limited situations.
