One of the reasons we drink our water is...
On Sunday night I had the displeasure of passing a kidney stone. What a pain...literally. And, unfortunately, this is a long process. The treatment was pain killers and an IV...I lost track of how many liters they ran through me...and drink lots of water. The prescription for the prevention of more stones is: 1) Drink 2-3 quarts of fluid daily, at least half from plain water 2) Avoid grapefruit and apple juice 3) Limit animal protein to no more than 10 oz/day I have always consumed fairly large quantities of water...at least 2 quarts of water per day on average, something I have been doing since long before I started a LC WOE. Of course low-carbing has cut fruit juices from my diet too and, since I also count calories, I have generally been eating less than 10 oz of animal protein per day for most of the last 7 months. As kidney stones tend to run in my family having one did not come as any particular surprise and I am inclined to blame the formation of this one on years of eating badly. That stated, I have an appointment with the urologist tomorrow where I am fairly certain that diet will be discussed...should make for an interesting conversation. I'll share what I learn if anybody is interested. Oh, and I finally passed the painful little fellow about an hour ago...otherwise I wouldn't be sitting here typing right now. What a relief. -- JJ. 275/184/183, BMI 26.4 - as of Apr 18, 2004 Atkins since Sep 1, 2003 http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/jjsmythe/my_photos 66.9% of the man I used to be. |

Are you going to have it analyzed to see what it is made of so you'll know for sure what part of your diet might affect it? I remember my Dad passing a stone, way back when i was a kid in the 70's. It was the first time I had ever seen the poor man cry. I'm glad it's over for you. I've read where the pain caused by this is comparable to the pain of giving birth to a child. If that is an accurate comparison I don't know how any woman ever has more than one baby. -- JJ. |

I've read where the pain caused by this is comparable to the pain of giving birth to a child. If that is an accurate comparison I don't know how any woman ever has more than one baby. That's why women have an higher pain threshold than men Besides, they used not to have birth control, so babies weren't exactly optionnal. When they got the choice, they also got the epidural. Few women willingly make the choice not to have an epidural... |
