I've heard that "Protein Power" is the best book having low carb theories
as to why low carb is good. Is this true?

I want to send my mother a book about low carb (she has the Atkins book
already). She's had carotid artery surgery to remove plaque, and now
she's terrified of eating anything with cholesterol in it. I want to
assure her that the amount of cholesterol in food doesn't mean anything.

Thanks!

Low Carb diets are like religions. IMHO "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution"
is best.

The used vendors on http://www.Amazon.com have good prices.

IMHO = In Hy Humble Opinion

I have Protein Power (actually, not quite as it's been on loan for quite a
while and may not be coming back). I thought it was very interesting but
also pretty extreme. I haven't read the South Beach Diet but from what I've
heard of it, it might be a better bet, particularly as it was written by a
cardiologist.

Eat, Drink & Be Healthy by Walter Willett. Protein Power doesn't get
into healthy fats versus saturated fats IIRC. And saturated fats and
trans-fats can still aggravate heart disease even if you aren't one of
the people responding much to dietary cholesterol.

The Zone diet books are pretty nice, and one of the things I like about
those books are that they teach portion size using fingers. It's
"handy" to gauge portions that way.

By the way, someone with heart disease should pay a LOT of attention to
get enough fiber. Those tend to be from low-glycemic carbs. Saying
"low-carb" without explaining bad carbs and good carbs isn't terribly
useful to a person with heart disease, IMO.

While I personally do not think that saturated fat means anything for most
people, perhaps there is some truth to the "some people might have
problems" with saturated fats idea. (I personally think that heart
disease is genetic or at least has no relationship with blood cholesterol.)

Thanks, Dally, I'll give this book a shot.

Would that be a Catholic or Protestant interpretation of good and bad?

I assume you're aware of these:

The Cholesterol Myths : Exposing the Fallacy that Saturated Fat and
Cholesterol Cause Heart Disease by Uffe Ravnskov

Life Without Bread
by Christian B. Allan (Author), Wolfgang Lutz

The first has nothing to do with LC but does deal with cholesterol, but the
second one is all about LC with not weight loss.

I've been meaning to buy the first one for some time now. I think that
one might be a bit much for my 100 pound, scared-witless about cholesterol
mom! ;-) However, I'll look into the second one.

Thanks -- I forgot about this one. It looks as if I'll have to do some
research this weekend with all of the suggestions.
