Default My dad has slipped

I live with my dad, and he started low-carbing about a month before I did.
I really enjoyed that we were doing it together. I knew that sometimes
when he was on the road with no time to eat lunch between jobs, that he
would cheat and grab a burger or chicken sandwich (with bun) somewhere and
eat it while driving, because low-carb options at fast food places such as
a grilled chicken salad were too difficult to eat and drive at the same
time. His job is very physical, so I guess he figured he'd burn off the
carbs anyway. But last night I saw him fixing a burger with a bun at
home!!! I didn't say anything, because I for one hated it in the past when
I'd cheat on my low-fat diets and someone would make a comment like "You
know you're not supposed to be eating that." I guess my dad isn't really
doing low-carb anymore, and I don't know if I should say anything. He was
doing well, I don't know how much he'd lost but he definitely looks
smaller, and it makes me sad to think he's giving up on it. I kind of want
to ask him if he's just taking a break, or if he's given up on it entirely,
or if he's still wanting to stay on plan but he's slipping and feeling
guilty about it. I kind of don't want to ask because I'm afraid that if he
is feeling guilty about it he'll get defensive and mad at me for asking.
Any advice?

My roommate who is 20 was on Atkins solidly for 5 weeks as she wanted to lose
10 pounds which she did. I found it so much easier with both of us on the plan,
but now she is going back to her previous ways of eating. I was surprised at
first, but am adjusting and trying to be supportive because she did meet her
goal.

I suggest you ask him flat out at a time when he is not eating. Be cheery
and positive about it....
It helps you to know because your ability to stay on plan could be affected
by what he is doing. You could also make a LC meal to present to him before
asking.

Also consider that having a bun every now and then may be really be giving
up....it depends on what else he is eating.

Maybe you can take over the cooking at home And the grocery shopping so
that there isn't anything around like bread and buns? Maybe if you can at
least keep him on track at home, if he slips while he's out then it might
not be so bad. I would also do as someone else suggested and just ask him..
maybe there is something bothering him and he's just taken on that *what the
hell* attitude that is so easy to fall into..

Thanks to everyone for the helpful hints, but it seems he's back on track!
He came home and saw me eating some turkey and cheese roll-ups and said
"That's very similar to what I had for lunch today, except I had some
pastrami" and I said, very casually "Oh, so you're back to low-carb then?"
And he said "I never really went off, last night was just a splurge because
Charlie wasn't eating the buns and I didn't want them to go bad." He's
never actually been as strict as I am with the whole low-carb thing, but
I'm glad he hasn't given up entirely.

Lots of people find that just cutting out the junk -- sodas, potato chips,
cookies, candy, rice, and pasta, etc, is enough. Some bread every now and
then ain't such a bad thing. Remember: carbs are not evil -- excessive
carbs are
