Default I am psychotic about dieting?

Lately, I have been missing my favorite foods, but I have such success dieting
that I don't want to gain any weight. I have been buying many chips, crackers,
saltines, ritz, ruffles, pringles, shortbread cookies, etc - chewing or licking
them, then spitting them out. I have licked a whole bag of ruffles to the point
my tongue has gotten raw from the salt. (p.s. I have dangerously low blood
pressure and crave salt nonstop - can never have enough!) Has anyone else done
this? Am I crazy or do a lot of dieters resort to this? I can't decide if
this gross but tasty habit is obsessive or mad genius... thanks for any input!
Be gentle... :-P

this is eating disorder-style behavior. if you can't stop on your own,
you might consider seeing a therapist or talking to your doctor about
it. it's really not a cool thing to be doing.

You are having cravings that have nothing to do with the snack
foods but with missing nutrients. Either that or it is TOM
related. I used to crave salty crunchy snacks during PMS.
Two ways to fight it.

FIRST from the list you have here, I guess the nutrient craving
would be calcium. Start drinking more fat free milk and eating
fat free yogurt.

SECOND you have got to make yourself stop buying these things.
Put the money in a piggy bank every time you avoid it. In one
year you can save enough for a pretty spiffy sweater.

I;'ve not heard of this before, but it doesn't sound normal or common
behaviour to me. It sounds like a step on the way to a possible
eating disorder - it's a bit like bulimia without swallowing the food.
I would talk to your doctor about the extent to which you may be
genuinely lacking in certain nutrients, minerals or whatever and how
you can get these from another source, either by supplements or by
finding healthier foods containing them that you can safely eat rather
than just taste.
Having suffered from disordered eating myself for many years, my
advice would be to be very careful of reinforcing any behaviour
concerning food that could become obsessive.

Sounds to me like you are trying to get salt into your system. If I were
you, I'd ask the doctor for something that will elevate your low BP to an
acceptable level. I suspect the cravings will then stop.

Having said that, I don't see much harm in your behavior--as long as you
don't start inhaling...er, I mean, ingesting those hi-cal foods. :
