Default Is jumping rope a good exercise?

Tomorrow I will venture out to wallymart to get myself a jumprope... Its
$4.97 or so for what they call a "speedrope".

I hate running, and it is COLD outside in Canada in the winter so I cannot
bike.
I have no problems doing muscle work, but I need a good cardio workout.
My work schedule does not permit for me to get my apartment's weight room
after work, so I need something good cardio wise.

Is this a good alternative?
I am thinking yes, but wanted to verify with people who know more about it
than I do.

I don't see why not as long as you're not very overweight (IMO)....it has
the potential to be high impact, especially if done on a hard surface.
Otherwise, it ought to be very good for a young guy...as always, start slow
and work up over time...

Here's some jumping rope hype (despite what it says, I think heavy people
would do better just walking -- but I don't know everything

Thanks roger. What would you consider "very overweight".
You can see the picture I posted today, the before and after, to get an idea
of where I am at weight wise.
I need to lose between 1-2 inches on my stomach to make it flat once and for
all.

I have no problem with jumping jacks, et all... I actually like skipping,
and since it is something I can do watching a hockey game or something like
that, it seems a good fit until I can get a gym membership and start to
learn some of those high tech machines they have.

Me, at 6'1" and 367 lbs is very overweight (before I started LCing over two
years ago). I don't think you're anywhere near that. You'll be fine. I
might looking to jumping rope myself (for days I don't want to ride my bike
for one reason or another)....

Combine JJ and JR together! Alternate between them while watching TV or
listening to fast music.

It is a great exercise which is why boxers use it often. Wear good
supportive sneakers while doing so.

Exercise does not have to be rigorous. The largest muscles in your body is
the thigh muscles and they require allot of energy to operate. Walking burns
fat for energy, not glucose, that's why walking is so beneficial, even in
cold weather! Cross country skiing is wonderful too in the winter!!!!

I can say the same thing about myself... walked my fat ass off... Now
I have an ass that's, in fact, too small.

Do sumo style deadlifts.
