Default Motivating Aspects Of faster Weright Loss

Caleb wrote back in Dec. 2002:

I believe that a faster rate of weight loss is much more motivating
than a
slower rate of weight loss, and that it will tend to preserve dieting
momentum. I think this is about as obvious as the fact that 1 and 1
are 2,

burn
yourself.
The following is from an exchange I had on ASD about a year ago:

Does ANYONE believe that a faster rate of weight loss does not
maintain
motivation better than a slower (e.g., one pound a month) rate of
weight
loss?

Any comments?

Hi Diva,

Well a faster weight loss may be more motivating but what happens when the
weight loss stops and then eventually reverses! When you lose weight very
quickly, it is usually because you are on a fad diet which you can only do
for a few days or weeks at the most. In order to lose weight permanently,
you need to lose weight slowly and gradually - that is the only proper way
to lose weight :-)

Good point,

The problems most have with weight loss is the scale. Losing weight means little if you cannot keep it off, and lets face it, most don't. Looking good is the most motivating of all in my experience. What people need to learn is that it is not always about losing weight, but losing inches which is more important. I don't even own a scale anymore, for it is losing inches that I find motivating, not fighting with a scale which can be just as demotivating for most.

Good luck and health to all, Mike

Mu -- How dare you read what is written on different sites! (Just
kidding, of course!)

And as you appear to be suggesting, faster weight loss does have a lot
more appeal than slower weight loss. (A guaranteed method to lose 1/4
pound in three months probably wouldn't sell too well -- but probably
it should. At least the person is not gaining weight and that's a huge
plus.)

But seriously, I'd be interested in taking a hundred people at random
who have lost and maintained their weight loss and asking them how
much weight they lost in an average month.

That particular detail would be very interesting to me.

Yours truly,

Caleb (who says: Keep reading!)

Atkins would agree and not agree.

I wouldn't be surprised if that number doesn't correlate with stopping
smoking, cold turkey types, and slow withdrawal types. Two addictions
(food and nicotine) both with varying chemical and psychological defeat
points.

I do encounter a koala, I may have to punch it in the face as a result.
Even a pretty koala looks ugly with a broken nose.
