only nine negative reports in last 3 years on Usenet groups on Splenda,
symptoms: Murray 2005.11.27

I searched on Google Groups for Splenda, symptoms , getting 608 posts
listed with the most recent first, and scanned through the first 200,
picking out accounts of personal or close associate's experiences
of symptoms from Splenda (sucralose), until October, 2002.

http://groups.google.com

I have increased clarity and added emphasis in some posts
by changing the spacing, but have not corrected typos and misspellings,
since their presence may also be symptomatic.
Due to a severe head injury at age 10, for instance,
I have to check every word and line I type.

I marked each sentence that specifies symptoms from Splenda or sucralose
with * .

I probably missed a few reports, since I just quickly scanned
over the first 200 posts and some of their associated threads,
and did not search for the term sucralose.

I skipped many complaints about taste except for one that used the term
"nasty aftertaste". Research shows that people have radically different
taste perceptions, enormously complicating the efforts of food technologists
to bring the greatest pleasure to the greatest number.

So, this is obviously a scouting expedition.

There is no public data to show how common sucralose symptoms are.

However, three years of Usenet groups has produced
these symptom reports by 9 people,
with the most recent person in August 2004 --
even though there has been a huge increase in sucralose sales since then.

There were about an equal number of reports clearly stating
that the person had no problems with sucralose or aspartame.

These fairly recent posts allow the person to be contacted directly
or through the public discussion group.
This is essential, if the testimony is to be trusted.

I hope more people will contribute public feedback
based on their own experience, pro and con,
and that the various groups will support this public sharing
of personal evidence re issues of mutual concern.

In mutual service, Rich Murray

Splenda seems to bother me, although not in exactly this way.
*It gave me severe heartburn, to the point where it kept me awake at night
and we thought I might be dealing with acid reflux.

I was put on Prevacid, which would temporarily relieve the symptoms, but
then they'd return. My doctor and I sat down to try to figure out what I'd
changed in my diet recently, and I made the connection.

I wasn't eating anything with sugar alcohols in it (which could have
accounted for the symptoms as well). But what HAD happened,
was that I'd run out of my normal sweetener (Sweet N Low)
and gotten some packets of Splenda for my daily teas and coffees.
When I switched back to Sweet N Low,
the symptoms disappeared again and have never returned.

So I can't be POSITIVE that it was the Splenda, but the correlation sure
seems strong.

Some people seem to have problems with sucralose, though.
*In my case, it set off a month-long bout of acid-reflux-life symptoms.
I'm not 100% certain that it was the sucralose,
but there's a good corollation between me getting rid of the Splenda,
and the symptoms going away several days later.
I haven't tried taking more Splenda to test if that was the cause,
because it's easy enough to avoid
and I don't want to go through that again if it was ;-)

Still, for most people, I'm sure it's at least as safe as anything else out
there. I certainly liked the taste, it just did a number on my stomach...

You are wrong.

I was hospitalized three times, suffering from near-drowning in my own
saliva, before I put two and two together and realized that it was
aspartame that caused the severe excess salivation.
This is an immune system response to the chemical.

Once I stopped drinking diet soda (and was careful to avoid aspartame in
all other forms), the problem stopped.
*On a side note, I can't tolerate stevia or more than about a half-can of a
splenda-containing soda either.
Cyclamates, however, are fine for me.

There are plenty of people who have bad reactions to aspartame who are
not phenylketoneurics. They simply have different symptoms.

Serious. There's been a lot of research done on aspartame, and a lot
of the results are, frankly, hair raising.

However, I've never read any research implicating it in CTS, but when I
was going through my bout, I was also consuming a lot of aspartame from
diet soft drinks.

Within a week of stopping that aspartame consumption my CTS symptoms
made a *dramatic* turn for the better. BTW, I didn't stop due to the
aspartame, it was just a happy accident.

Coincidence? My doctor thought so, and so did some researchers I later
contacted, but I'm sticking with my 73% certainty.

Do some googling on aspartame to see just how "sweet it is."

Yes, the web is filled with lots of pseudoscience and generic hysteria,
but there's reason enough, at least for me, to Nancy Reagan aspartame.

Fascinating.
*Well I asked because recently I had to stop using Splenda
because of a really nasty intolerance.
So I started drinking soft drinks that had aspartame in them instead.
And for the first time in a very long time,
(maybe since I stopped ingesting aspartame!)
my ulnar-tunnel syndrome has been bothering me.

Coincidence? I'll stop it to test your theory. After my reaction to
Splenda, something entirely different, nothing would surprise me. We're
all guinea pigs now you know... all running around in our little
tread-wheels to keep the economy growing.

Has anyone heard of anyone having adverse reactions to using Splenda?
*My best friend started using it a week or so ago and
has had spells where her heart races, she feels nauseous and lightheaded,
etc.
She's been low carbing for three weeks.
Yesterday it got bad enough to where she had to call the EMTs.
They said that everything was within range, blood pressure, etc.
She just called wondering if I had heard of anyone having any kind of
reactions like these while using Splenda.
She felt better this morning, had a cup of coffee with two splenda packets
and her heart started racing minutes after drinking it.
Just wondering if anyone else has heard of this problem.
Thanks bunches!

crap. I tend to stick to "real food". Real food puts one's taste

watermelon to me, now. I can't understand the desire to replace
standard crap with crap of a different nature, but YMMV.

I hate to bring up this issue but I've stopped using Splenda for the
following reason:
*I get a "hangover" about 20 to 30 minutes following ingestion of Splenda.

Since I retired, I began using more Splenda than when I was working.
I began to notice that after 20 to 30 minutes following Splenda,
I felt sleepy. This would be in the morning or the middle of the day.
This drowsy feeling lasts for about an hour.
This has been going on for a couple of months.
I don't believe I had this reaction before two months ago.

My nephew reports the same symptoms.

I stopped using Aspartame because I thought Splenda would be healthier
since it was made from sugar.
Now...I don't know if I even want to go back to Aspartame.

I'm now using Sweet 'n Low and feeling much better, though I prefer the
taste of Splenda and Aspartame over saccharine.

Probably why he hated to bring up the issue, because of the predictable

Google a little; he's been here a while and certainly knows what T2 is.

Thanks to both you and Gary.
I have been posting here for a long time and
had anticipated a negative response.
I don't blame diabetics for disliking the sweetener attacks.
These items make our lives more comfortable.

I don't think this response I'm getting is a blood sugar related problem as
I've tested below 120 during these periods.

I've since gone back to saccharine and am happy to have it available.
I'll hang on to the 400 Splenda packets
and try them again a month down the road
and see if they still give me a hangover.

This experience may help

-Two years ago I started to have funny reactions in my body.
My muscles were twiching we call that also fasciculation of muscle.
I had fasciculations in all my members As I went to see a doctor he
sent me for an Electro Myogram EMG test which was foundsuspicious.
I beleived for a while that I had Lou Gehrig disease called also
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis ALS.

As I was reading about the possible reasons of such disease,
I followed the thesis of toxicity by the environement.
I eliminated from my diet all process food, food supplement or substitute,
stopped the use of every cologne, body lotion, soap, shampoo, deodorant,
eliminated all forms of spray from the house etc.... In a few word
my environement and food was as natural and as basic as possible.

After 2 weeks the fasciculations diminished and vere gone after six
weeks.

I reintroduced gradually all the products I used in the past .
After the last phase of the reintroduction, food additives and substitutes,
the
fasciculations restarted.

By then I isolated a few products that may be responsible for the problem.
Amongst those products my sugar substitute Splenda.
*I stopped the use of Splenda and because i had not restarted
using it for a long period of time the fasciculations disappeared.
I went back to using white sugar for one year.
When a few weeks ago I noticed that I was puting on weight
restarted using some left over Splenda.
Within three weeks my Fasciculations restarted again wich lead
me to beleive that there is adirect lien between sucralose and this
problem.

My question is now: what are the possible effects over a long period of
time? I have read many health editorials but never found a similarity
to my experience. So I decided to share this information for people that
may experience the same symptoms.

Please share this info with as many people as possible

i know very little about the safety of spenda. i know it tast good in my kool aid. but i noticed the mention of asparatame, and i do know some things about that. asparatame is considered safe by the us federal goverment, but in a very small amount only. the us fda determined ( after quite some time of disapproval) that the amount of asparatame found in one 12oz. can of diet soft drink in a 24 hr. period is safe. it is also known that when asparatame gets hot (somewhere around 85*F) it turns to fermaldahide. now that is scary, to me anyway. it is also a fact that asparatame was not approved by the us fda until the scientist who came out with it was put in charge of the fda. hmmmmm. kinda makes me wonder.
