Low carb/slow carb success: my story
Hello, all. Sorry I don't have anything to sell or a blog to send you
to, or anything like that. I just wanted to tell my story to encourage others who are interested in the low carb/slow carb lifestyle. The bottom line is that in one year I lost 80 some pounds, ten inches off my waist and five inches off my neck. Blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose are now all normal. Last April, I had to go to the hospital for a kidney infection, caused by a kidney stone. While I was there, they began to give me insulin injections three times a day. Now, I knew I was diabetic, but I wasn't doing anything about it. I was eating what I wanted, and what I wanted was bread and sweets of all kinds. Like most of you, I've been on diets and lost and re-gained the same 25 pounds many times over the last 20-odd years. Now, here I was, feeling awful and having to take insulin shots thrice daily, blood glucose out of control, blood pressure too high, cholesterol too high and obese. So I decided when I came home from the hospital that I had to do something different. My goal was only to get my blood glucose numbers down, and so I decided to give up candy and sweets. I had some candy left in the house, some of my favorites, and so I decided that when that was gone, I'd not buy any more. Well, it was hard to do. I had realized several years ago that I am a compulsive over eater, My favorite binge foods were carbs and more carbs but, like with my diabetes, I hadn't done anything about it. . So I looked into Overaters Anonymous. http://www.oa.org/index.htm I'm glad that I did. They even have online meetings several times every day: http://www.therecoverygroup.org/ it still wasn't easy to give up sweets, but OA gave me some tools to help out. After a few weeks of no sweets, I began to look into the Glycemic Index, and gave up breads, potatoes and other high glycemic foods. After a year, I'm at the results I mentioned above. I don't really know how much weight I've lost, because I wasn't getting on the scale a year ago. I do know that I have weighed 300 pounds, and I couldn't have been very far from that a year ago, maybe even over. Using that weight, I've lost between 80 and 90 pounds. I'm now at around 210. I'm really not using the scale to measure my results. I'm using the way my clothes fit. It hasn't been easy. Not by a long shot. But, one day at a time, I'm proof that it can be done. I still have a way to go, but I'm getting there. I'm not posting this to brag. I'm posting it because I've gotten some great information and support from this group and wanted to pass along those things. I wish you luck in your own journey. |

Hey, you have every reason to brag, and I'll join you...you have done a terrific job and here is a pat on the back ((((((((( Good for you. I agree with you, it's not easy to give up many things, but after a time is does become much easier to just say no, and the cravings do get less. I really don't even use that much artificial sweetener anymore Again, congratulations, and best to you. Cheri P.S. One good little snack when you crave something sweet. Put a few drops of Sweetzfree in a bowl (it doesn't take much) add a few drops of vanilla extract (maple extract is good too) add a handful of *natural almonds* and swirl around with your fingers, tossing the almonds until the bowl gets dry. They come out sweet, and with the vanilla they taste a great deal like Jordan Almonds. It satisfies my sweet tooth. |

LOL Cheri Piggy backing on my own post here, looking at the link, I don't consider that Spam since he isn't selling anything. Many worthwhile ORGS take donations, and I think OA is worthwhile. Yeah, right, I'm convinced.- I only included the OA links because OA has worked for me in conjunction with a low carb/slow carb way of eating. I've never sent them any money and have never been solicited. |
