Default weight gain after atkins

can anyone help me? I lost 30kgs with atkins 2 years ago, 18 months ago I
started working out , cardio, heavy weights and boxing 5 days a week for 2-3
hrs a day. I started eating a limited amount of carbs for force and muscle
growth but now the fat is creeping back as well. Is there any way I can limit
this but carry on eating carbs?

Try a cyclical ketogenic diet, or CKD.

What sort of carbs are you eating? Remember that there are high GI
carbs and low GI carbs. If you have started getting your carbs from gi-
Gi veges, refined flours etc, then the weight will come back. Diet is
still the key. Keep a food diary, watch what you eat. Athletes eat a
lot of carbs and train a lot, but they do not get fat, because they
eat the type that ensures that they continue to burn fat and not store
it.

How closely did you follow Atkins? Did you do the OWL and the pre-
maintenance phase while working out? If not, then take a step back, re-
read the book, and follow the rules.

Good luck, I am sure Atkins can still help you,

Jon.

I'm training to walk an ultramarathon (50k). I usually eat a half-
cup serving of oatmeal in the morning, along with some fruit, and get
the rest of my carbs from low GI vegetables the rest of the day. No
bread, potatoes, pasta, etc. I haven't had any problem with energy
and I've been walking 40+ miles a week.

Everything I have read assures me that I need to carbo load, but I
haven't found that to be true. I was following low-carb/slow carb
for six months before I began walking. When I started I was doing
around 15 miles per week. I don't limit my fat intake much, and I
guess my body has learned to use the fat for energy effectively.

I'd suggest you try getting back to the Atkins plan and see how your
body reacts, regarding muscle growth and force. You might surprise
yourself.

Exactly what do you mean by Atkins? Did you read the book,
follow the directions, move from phase to phase on schedule?
What's your CCLL and CCLM?

All good stuff.

I started eating a limited amount of carbs for force and muscle
growth

Exactly what do you mean by carbs? Given that the Atkins
process teaches you the exact optimal number of grams of
carb for loss - CCLL is found by falling out of ketosis then
dropping back to just barely in ketosos, and the exact
optimal number of grams of carb for maintenance - CCLM is
found by increasing until appetite turns back on or by a shift
in water retention swing showing liver recharged with glycogen,
it's hard to tell what you mean.

but now the fat is creeping back as well. Is there any way I can limit
this but carry on eating carbs?

If you followed some simple menu with a fixed number of carbs
and called it Atkins, or otherwise did not follow the directions
in the book, I suggest following what the directions say this
time around.

Drifting the gradually higher carb counts in maintenance is
SO easy to do. And of course exactly as it says in the directions
weight gain happens over CCLM. Been there, done that, got the
one size larger shirts ...

Out of curiosity, I want to ask on thing. Is it a proven "fact" that
muscle growth from weight training depends on an increased number of
carbohydrates? I would think that protein is the key component in
building muscle.

Dietary carbs can aid muscle growth with weight training, but I wouldn't say
it depends on it...and protein is a key component

" Everything I have read assures me that I need to carbo load, but I
haven't found that to be true. "

I seem to recall that Dr. Atkins even wrote that carb loading was a
myth, and believed (I do not remember if he had studied this fully)
that consuming more fat before an endurance event actually provided as
good energy, or better.

The problem of getting into the habit of carb loading is that when you
stop exercising, or slow down for a while ,you can quickly put on
weight if you do not limit your carbs.
