My vote is for "Living the Low-Carb Life...from Atkins to the Zone" by Jonny
Bowden.
There's a picture of the book on the main page of his site
www.jonnybowden.com
I got it at Wal-Mart and it's very good at explain why low-carb works, and
debunking myths. It has a nice resource section int he back and ASDL-C is
mentioned. A good read and well worth the $20CDN I paid for it.
HTH!

I've heard that "Protein Power" is the best book having low carb theories
as to why low carb is good. Is this true?

I want to send my mother a book about low carb (she has the Atkins book
already). She's had carotid artery surgery to remove plaque, and now
she's terrified of eating anything with cholesterol in it. I want to
assure her that the amount of cholesterol in food doesn't mean anything.

Thanks!

There are two Protein Power books. The first one called Protein Power
and the second one called Protein Power LifePlan. I recommend getting
Protein Power LifePlan.

It has much good information in it, plus it deals with 3 different
strictness. The first one being, the loosest plan. 80% of the
benefit with giving up the least (low carb for healthy people..
especially healthy people that dont want to give up caffeine,
artificial sweeteners, some grain products). A middle of the road
plan. Then a very strict plan (low carb paleo) for those that the
first 2 dont completely help all of their health issues.

Would that be a Catholic or Protestant interpretation of good and bad?

Quite the world-view you've got there JC. Runs the gamut of religion
from A to B.

Is it a mystical world-view that allows you to label carbs as bad? It surely
isn't a scientific world-view.

I have Protein Power (actually, not quite as it's been on loan for quite a
while and may not be coming back). I thought it was very interesting but
also pretty extreme.

I think Protein Power would be my choice for a newbie. The introductory
section, where they discuss the anthropological diet stuff, how the Egyptian
mummies, who lived on a grain-rich diet similar to the low-cholesterol
'heart-healthy' diet the medical profession is largely still recommending,
had signs of rampant obesity and heart disease... quite compelling. Although
the protein calculations get a little technical for a lot of beginners. I'd
tell people to ignore that at first and just count carbs, then gradually
refine their diet as to protein grams, types of fat, etc. Much easier to do
when you're stabilized on LC and no longer having all those carb cravings.

I haven't read the South Beach Diet but from what I've
heard of it, it might be a better bet, particularly as it was written by a
cardiologist.

I haven't read it either, but I'd point out that Dr. Atkins was also a
cardiologist. The Eades (Protein Power) are also doctors, and Dr.
Schwarzbein, who authored yet another good low-carb book, is an
endocrinologist who got interested in low-carb because she found it helped
her diabetic patients, many with the usual cardiac/circulatory problems
common to diabetics, so much more than the high-carb diet promoted by the
ADA.

They're probably all good versions of the diet. The best one will be the one
she'll read and follow, I guess.

I like it best. It seems others think Lyle's book covers the
biochemistry in more detail, but I haven't read his so can't comment.

PP backs up it's recommendations with research, but explained on a
laymen's level. I think it's an excellent introduction to low-carb and
it's what I usually recommend and or give to folks.

Bob,

Here's another vote for Protein Power. It has a very informative section on
cholesterol.

However, all the books are a bit out of date because they don't include the
several studies published over the past year which documented--in mainstream
medical journals--that people on low carb diets generally improve their
cholesterol and other heart health risk factors. Those stats are much more
compelling than the assertions of any of the diet doctors.

I'd suggest also printing out some of the abstracts you can find at
http://www.lowcarbresearch.org and showing them to her. Plus, if you have
the time, track down some of the most recent ones via Google, which haven't
shown up on the low carb research page yet.
