Sorry - spelling mistake - XENICAL Hi, I am a dietitian and have several clients that take Xenical. Xenical works by binding with Gastric and Pancreatic Lipase; enzymes that help you absorb fat. The goal is try try and eat 30% calories from fat at a meal that you have taken Xenical with. I really recommend sticking with about 30% calories from fat. Believe me, you have probably experience the side effects of eating a meal with a greater percentage of fat than 30%-- NOT FUN!!! But, you don't want to eat a diet that is TOO low in fat, because you really won't get any benefit from taking the Xenical. It's worth doing your homework to make sure you are eating about 25-30% of your calories from fat! Generally, Xenical will prevent you from absorbing about 30% of the fat that you consume at a meal that Xenical is taken with. So, what you can do, is look at how many fat grams you have eaten at each meal where you took Xenical: With EACH meal, do the following to figure out how many calories you are avoiding:: 1. Look at the nutrition labels of the foods you ate at that meal, and look at the TOTAL fat grams Just look at Fat or Total Fat on the nutrition label, don't add the Saturated, Unsaturated, or Trans fats to this number, as they are already included in the total fat grams. ADD up your total fat consumption for EACH meal, but don't add the totals up for the day, keep them separated by meal, and ONLY look at meals that you took Xenical WITH. 2. Now, multiply the total fat grams eaten at each meal by 0.3 - This will give you the number of fat grams that you DID NOT absorb, because of the Xenical. (because Xenical typically prevents you from absorbing about 30% of the fat you ate at the meal) 3. Take the number of fat grams that you got in step 2, (fat grams that you didn't absorb, and multiply this number by 9. There are 9 calories in each gram of fat. This will show you how many calories you didn't absorb from the meal. 4. Figure out how many calories were blocked for the entire day. 5. Remember that you will need to create a 3500 calorie deficit to lose 1 pound. By doing this, you can see that Xenical has a pretty SMALL impact on the amount of weight that you lose. IF I ate 2000 calories a day, and 30% of my calories were from fat, and I only ate 3 meals, with that fat divided evenly at those 3 meals, taking Xenical with each meal, I would block about 20g of fat per day, which is equal to about 180 calories each day. So, it would take me about 2.5 weeks or so to lose one pound. (and this is assuming that 2000 kcals is the amount necessary to maintain my wt.) HOPE this makes sense and HELPS you out!!!! :-) |

Sorry - spelling mistake - XENICAL Hi, I am a dietitian and have several clients that take Xenical. Thanks for doing the math! I didn't do the calculations myself because I don't like taking pills and wouldn't take the stuff anyway. It did seem, though, that 25% of the fat in their recommended 15-gram-of-fat meals is not a lot. Also, 15g is NOT a lot of fat for a meal. You'd have to be eatin' almost pure sugar. |

So Xenical blocks 30% of all fat eaten then? Whats the relevance of meals consisting of more than 30% fat? Surely Xenical will just 30% of whatever you eat? Or is this just a separate side effect? |
