I was just looking at my pics of me first official dress fitting. One thing
I noticed a few years ago in some pictures is my upper arms look really
bulky. (especially compared to my 5" wrists). My gown is strapless, so my
arms will be showing. I'm not liking their looks.

I've got 4 weeks to go - think I can make any headway in arm improvement in
4 weeks? Anyone have any suggestions on what to target to get great
looking biceps/triceps in 4 weeks.? :-)

(no "you can't target weight loss" naysayers need respond.... I KNOW! - I'm
not targeting weight loss)

I have been using free weights alot and I find that they give a much better
work out then the machines. With the free weights, you work out the
stabilizer muscles, etc. There is so much variety.... and a ton of links
online to show you how to use them. Please refresh my memory... do you have
access to a gym or working out at home??

Muscular arms, when at rest, just look big. That may be all that's
going on. Do you know any women who are competitive swimmers? Just
look at their arms -- they're big, but it's not fat. I think the only
way to have skinny arms is to be generally skinny. That said, though,
there are exercise that can build arm muscles and perhaps give you a
little more shapeliness. Check out www.exrx.net for triceps and
biceps exercises.

I think that just by doing several different exercises on biceps, triceps
and shoulders, it can help your arms alot. I have done these allot and like
them and notice alot of improvement with my arms and shoulders (taken from
the www.exrx.net site that Chris references):

-dumbell front raise
-dumbell shoulder press
-dumbell curl or preacher curl
-dumbell lying or sitting triceps extension
-lying fly - biceps and triceps are stabilizer muscles with this one (my
favorite one, it works my chest pretty good too)
-dumbell bench press - biceps are stabilizer muscles

I use cable machines and weight machines for variety as well. However, I
feel like I get a bigger workout by using dumbells, as it works stabilizer
muscles too.

I just saw Chris's post and I am positive that she can give better advise
then I can on the matter.

Happy Holidays!!

You've got it exactly right, Perple. And I was too lazy last night
to list any exercises :-}.

One other thing you might want to add is dumbbell lateral raises. And
I second the recommendation to use dumbbells rather than machines.

If it's fat making your upper arms look big then you are trying to
"spot reduce." Are they flabby? Then you have to lose more weight
all over; as you know spot reduction doesn't work. Finally, I doubt
you can do much in 4 weeks.

There is one young woman at the gym who is about 33 and is very
strong...front squats 175, back squats over 250(probably over 275 by now).
Her trainer always has her lifting heavy. She is so funny about it..always
giggles and laughs when I ask her about competing in power lifting. (She
tried olympic style lifting once and didn't like it). She just can't admit
how gifted she is strength wise. In any event, last time I was talking to
her she was lamenting how big her arms were from the muscle growth. Her
arms are big, but like Chris said, when not at work, they just look heavy.
She is in wonderful shape. I think it's true...defined arms also requires
very little body fat to a is -this -really -good -for -you -point.
Rats...at least you will know the muscles are there! Elise

Oh yeah, thanks for the reminder. I like that one too, but its not one of
my favorites. I have a herniated disk in my lower neck (C4-C5) and that
exercise can hurt a little if I use too much weight.

Chris, what do you think of the neck exercises that are on that site? I've
never done then. I was wondering if they would help strengthen my neck or
if it would make my neck worse due to my injury. I pretty much live with
mild constant pain. It doesn't bother me most of the time, as I am just
used to it. I know that you aren't an orthopedist, but I was just looking
for an opinion.

Losing this weight has helped, but I still have a ways to go. I also have
issues with my shoulders due to digging bra straps. When I get to goal, I
will probably have a boob lift and reduction.

Thanks!

(waiting for hubby to wake up so we can exchange gifts!)

To this I would add:
-- incline bicep curls. I just started doing these and they really work
the whole upper arm.

-- assisted dips on the Gravitron (or maybe you can do unassisted dips?)

I would also second the people who say that muscles look flabby when at
rest. In reality you aren't ever AT rest for more than a second and
people observe the play of the muscles as you move and the "static" you
that you picture isn't the way you're perceived by others.

I went to a wedding in October where the bride wore a strapless and
backless dress and it was absolutely breathtaking precisely BECAUSE she
had muscular shoulders, arms and back. (Though I'd bet you a dollar
that hardly anyone else realized she had been weight-lifting - refer to
the Marilyn Monroe thread.)
