Do you know your Hba1c level? Do you care?
Great news for the health obessed (like me)! A home test is available
for Hba1c - it's called "A1cNow" and it's available from Walgreen's drugstores, among others - cost - $24.99. If you are overweight, your risk of diabetes and of metabolic syndrome skyrockets. Hba1c measures your average blood glucose (sugar) level for the least 2-3 months. An Hba1c result over 6% is potentially very bad news. In fact, the lower your Hba1c, the better - see http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/conte...2/7277/15#SEC3 - summary for you all - it predicts heart disease better than chol - and it predicts overall mortality. Yes, your doc can order the blood test if you'd rather not do (or pay) for it yourself. So what to do to lower blood glucose and Hba1c? You've all heard it befo exercise, avoid refined grains, added sugars, and white potatoes. Minimize saturated fat and eat more fiber. For most Americans their Western meat and potatoes diet is slowly killing them. If your Hba1c is greater than 6%, see doc right away. My Hba1c is now 5.1%, down from 5.2% two weeks ago. Below 5% is ideal and I hope to get there. |
