But the Atkins diet has nothing to do with your condition. No diet is
going to cause what you saw in the blood tests. Moreover, you're subject
of "TAKE CARE!" implies a warning; but the warning is moot, as the diet
did not cause your condition.

The diet might have caused those blood results, *if* he has undiagnosed
gout (which is hereditary), especially if he was eating too much meat
and not drinking enough.

Eating too much meat could have raised his uric acid levels above
normal, if he has gout. Crystals of uric acid start to form at levels
above 7mg/dl. The BUN and creatinine might be elevated because he
is also forming uric acid crystals in his kidneys, but dehydration
and eating too much protein can also raise BUN and creatinine levels.

The eye problem could be related or unrelated. While uric acid
crystals most often show symptoms of gout first in the joints of
toes or fingers, they have been occasionally found in other tissues
equally as peculiar-sounding as inside the eyeball.

That is true. Thanks for the clarification.

Something similar happened to me just recently and I've been on
Atkin's for almost two years. My problems were caused by prescription
medications that I was taking combined with the weight I had lost
which made me over-medicated.

As a kidney transplant recipient, I have a full set of blood tests
every month. That allows me to be able to analyze yours.

If I were you, I would get a consult from a kidney doc. Your test
results are not normal. You have lost more than 25% of normal kidney
function. My transplant coordinator goes nuts if my creatinine goes to
1.1. Also, your BUN, while barely out of the normal range also went
up.

The other abnormal results are related to liver function. Your trigs,
uric acid and total bilirubin all increased indicating possible liver
problems. You can probably get the uric acid down by drinking more
water and eating cherries. Your other liver function tests are OK.

When this happened to me, two meds were discontinued and a third had
the dose reduced. It was not diet related. Check for possible
side-effects of any meds or supplements you may be taking. After the
changes to my meds and doses all my readings settled down again.

I'm posting this to let you know that your experience is not the norm
and to let other posters know that there are frequently other causes
for blood test abnormalities.

TAKE CARE! Results of a month with Atkins.

On August 11, 2004 I published in this forum under the title "Help I
do not lose weight with Atkins", so whom want to know more antecedents
of my particular situation and how I made the diet go and read this
article. I now want to publish my outputs and make a warning of a
complication that I have had to be useful to the readers of this
forum.

To the end of a month of diet, in phase of induction (20 grams of
carbohydrates a day) I have succeeded in going down 3 kg. The loss of
weight was produced between the 3ª and 4ª week .

My analytic gave the following outputs:

Before beginning the diet At 30 days of diet Normal Value

Blood glucose 102 mg/dL 78.4 60 - 110
Blood urea nitrogen 17 mg]/dL 22 9 - 21
Creatinine 1.30 mg]/dL 1.68 0.60 - 1.20
Triglycerides 118 mg]/dL 218 60 - 165
Cholesterol 237 mg]/dL 221 120 - 200
Uric acid 6.7 mg]/dL 9.6 2.4 - 7.0
Proteins 7.2 g /dL 7.1 6.4 - 8.3
GOT 28 UI/L 27 0 - 36
GPT 24 UI/L 19 0 - 41
Gamma-GT 37 UI/L 31 1 - 50
Alkaline phosphatase 69 UI/L 63 40 - 100
LDH 332 UI/L 346 230 - 460
Total bilirubin 0.70 mg/dL 0.90 0.20 - 1.00
Sodium 138.0 mmol/L 143 135 - 145
Potassium 4.20 mmol/L 4.46 3.60 - 5.00
URINE all normal acetone +++ negative

One could appreciate that in 30 days of Atkins diet I had a low
increase of creatinine, and a very significant increase of
triglycerides and URIC ACID. Cholesterol didn't show a significative
change.

This morning I woke up with blurred vision, and I consulted to an
oculist in the hospital where I work, who after carrying out me a
careful examination, he observed that I had small micro crystals in
the vitreous humor of my eye, that probably are made from uric acid,
that besides settling in the articulations where there is sinovial
liquid, it could also make it in the internal liquids of the eye like
it is the vitreous humor.
Naturally he advised me to leave this diet.

A greeting for all.
