Article - High-protein diets: Good for your waistline, bad for your stomach?
By Kelly James-Enger
Special to MSN ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- High-protein diets promise that if you cut back on carbohydrates, you'll shed pounds. As a result, millions of Americans are embracing popular high-protein plans like the Atkins and South Beach diets that limit carbs. But in their fervor to whittle their waistlines, dieters may not be considering the impact their new eating styles could have on their digestive systems as well. http://gerd.msn.com/GERDUp2004-14LowCarb.asp |

They imply that eating 25g of fiber per day is || incompatible with LC. They refer to an actual study that said that || GERD declined on LC, and then an anecdote of some assistant professor || saying that "some people complain of heartburn on LC". || || My personal anecdote is that I had heartburn 3 days per week. || || As soon as I went on my reduced carb diet in June 2003, my heartburn || disappeared for good and I have not yet had ONE incident of || heartburn. || || I can literally pig out on food now (vegetables, including tomatoes) || and would have no heartburn. By pigging out I mean eating, like, 3 || lbs || of tomatoes at once. Throw a bunch of fatty meat to this, still, no || heartburn. || || I recently had an enormous breakfast consisting of fatty bacon, a || huge quantity of eggs etc (Aug 15). A buffet type continental || breakfast. No heartburn. I don't get heartburn or acid reflux anymore either, while I'm on LC. The funny thing, though, is if I introduce lots of carbs back in, then the heartburn will return. AGain, who knows why these people think that LCers don't eat fiber - apparently they still view LC as a "meat" diet. You noticed how the return to it as a high-protein diet, that tells you a lot right there. |

I always comment to them to try LC as it seems to eliminate those problems for a lot of people. |
