Default Glycogen used locally

When I started to practice sports again, I noticed a very big drop of
weight each time I wass changing activity.
For instance, When I started to swimm again, I droped 4-5 pounds in 2 days.
Same thing when I took up running.
I fidured out it could mean that glycogen that was contained in the
muscles was used only when the specific muscle was in need of it.
And someone had told me it wasn't working that way, and that if you are
in ketosis, you have no more glycogen, neither in your lever nor in you
muscles.
Guess what : I found that it is not true.

http://www.uvp5.univ-paris5.fr/CAMPU...ly/0200faq.htm

reading this french article about how the body uses carbs,
I read this :

"A jeun :

The last sentence could be translated as follows:

Glycogen reserves of a musle are excusively used locally during a
muscular effort.

I thought it could be interesting to share.

There will be some small amount, but generally glycogen does get depleted
from liver and the muscles -- that's why we LCers get the water weight
reduction at the beginning of going LC.

Also, that statement doesn't not imply that glycogen won't get depleted, it
just said it is used locally within a muscle during effort.

Yup. That's what muscle glycogen is for.

That's not true. Ketosis happens when the liver is depleted of
glycogen. The muscles have nothing to do with it.

So, is it possible that the liver holds at least 5 lbs of Glycogen?
This might explain why some people gain a quick 5 pounds when they cheat or
stop ketosis!

Cameron,

The refilling of Liver Glycogen is EXACTLY why people will suddenly gain a
surprising amount of weight when they boost their carbs, often by a
relatively small amount.

I will always gain 2 lbs if my carbs go over 70 grams a day and it will
always take 3 days for those two pounds to come off. If I boost my carbs
over 100 for more than a week, I'll gain 6 lbs--the same 6 pounds I lost
when I started low carbing.

It's useful to know how much you personally will regain after a carb up to
save yourself from the panic that otherwise afflicts many low carbers and,
paradoxically, causes them to give up and eat everything in sight just
because they regained a couple pounds of water weight.

The liver hold much less than 5 lbs of glycogen -- around .5 to l
pound of glycogen. But for every gram of glycogen stored 3-4 grams of
water is stored along with it. So yes, its really easy for someone
can gain back "weight" when they go from LC to eating carbs again due
to liver and muscle refilling.
