Default Sick - What Do You All Do When You Get Sick

Sore Throat, Achy Body, Mushy Head and everything else that you get
during the onset of flu and cold season. I have already gone over to
tea and honey, toast with butter and chicken noodle/ rice soup and
anything else that will make or has made me feel better in the past
while I am sick. A can of tuna and a steak are not what my body is
telling me that I need right now.

I am resigned to the fact that lo carbs schmo carbs is the ticket
during the two or so times I get ill during the cool Fall and Winter
seasons. Anyone care to enlighten me on how you get through it without
indulging yourself in comfort food, not cake and cookies but the kind
of foods that I have mentioned above. In my opinion this sort of off
the wagon eating is different then say binge eating or over indulging
say during the Holidays and is something that is not worth fighting
myself over.

I'm with you. I have a beastly cold/bronchitis right now, and I'm downing
chicken soup complete with noodles, beef soup with potatoes, and dilute hot
cider (couldn't find an aspartame-free powder). I think my cough syrup has
sugar in it, but I'm not going to worry about it.

The last time I was really sick, in December, I followed a similar game plan
and lost 7 pounds, so I'm not going to worry about it. I know some people
stick faithfully to their plan even when sick, but I personally feel better
easing up a bit.

Hope you recover soon.

Reb

I hear what you're saying. I usually just try to just go for somewhat
higher carb foods that you feel like and are convenient. For example,
eating chicken noodle soup, but maybe skipping most of the noodles,
for example. Or eating another soup, like vegetable, that isn't super
high carb. And a sandwich, made with either low carb bread or real
bread, sounds pretty good.

I think what you have going for you is that when you're sick, you
generally have much less appetite, so even if you up the carbs, you
won't be going too far off course. I'd just stay away from things
like sugar, cookies, candy, etc, but that is pretty easy for me, cause
I don't feel like them much when I'm sick anyway.

OK, these are not induction foods and might be even considered
cheating, but, in moderation, they would probably not trigger a
carbohydrate binge. Namely, I would indulge in a citrus fruit or some
grated apple or a glass of hot milk. How about adding some sugar-free
honey to the last two options? Another option is to drink a cup of hot
beef of chicken broth. The other day I made a strong broth with some
soup bones and pieces of ox tail. I later fixed myself a bowl of soup
with the marrow from the bones floating in it plus some meat that fell
off the ox tail bones, which was very soft and gelatinous in texture
with pieces of fat clinging to it. This might not be your kind of
thing, but to me, the hot broth with chunks of chewy meat felt very
soothing and comforting. Give it a try!

Oh, another idea. How about coring an apple and filling it with some
ricotta cheese mixed with artificial sweetener and egg (for binding);
then baking it in a moderately hot oven until the apple is soft.
Again, not induction food, but might be OK for an occasional
convalescent indulgence.

I'm just getting over a nasty cold myself. Mostly I just drank tons of hot
hot tea with lemon, and an occasional splash of brandy. I had no appetite so
carby foods were not a problem for me.

However I've also noticed that when I'm eating high-carb my cold always
lingers, and then develops into nasty bronchitis. But the times when I have
stayed very low carb the cold clears up more quickly and I *don't* get
bronchitis (which I am very prone to), so that helps me stay LC there, the
desire to be better quickly!

You can buy the plain chicken broth but, I must admit that, chicken noodle
is probably what I would get when I'm sick.

I needed cough drops recently and discovered that the sugar-free
cream-savers make a good substitute.

Interesting observation. When I got bronchitis last year, it was
immediately after a carb fest Thanksgiving. The last cold I got (just a few
weeks ago, actually...darn sickly neighborhood kids) was very brief, just a
day or two, no bronchitis and responded well to Zicam. I don't remember for
sure, but I think I was pretty low-carb at the time. With this cold, the
beginning of it just happened to coincide with a run of higher carb eating,
and it was totally unresponsive to Zicam, going right into bronchitis.

You might be onto something.
