Default I need some advice please

Hi all. I need some advice and figured this would be a great place to
start. I am seriously overweight. 5'10" tall and 306 pounds and a 28 years
old male. I am really not sure how to go about starting my lifestyle change.
I am going to start walking this week for at least 30 minutes at least 5x a
week. I know this is a start and I have to do much more to achieve my goals
but my problem is going to be with food and portions. There are so many
places to look on the internet...it all seems so overwhelming to me. Any
help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks in
advance.

Welcome Paul.

Starting a weight loss program can be overwhelming. It often helps to
change just a few things each week instead of trying to tackle them all at
once. The fitday website mentioned in another post is a great place to
journal your food and progress. I believe it has some nutritional
information, too. I've included another site below that is a great source
of information. Click on the "eating" button. It's geared toward women but
has excellent information for everyone.

Many of us in the group use the weight lifting exercises on the site.
Weight lifting is another exercise you might consider in order to retain
muscle as you go through the weight loss phase.

You can join us in some of our weekly challenges. We often have a weekly
challenge for drinking water, walking and other types of exercise. They
aren't contests - just friendly reminders to help us maintain healthy
lifestyles.

There are many in the group who started at the very point you are beginning.
They've been successful and so can you. You'll certainly find lots of
encouragement and information in the group. I hope to see you posting
often.

I found that the Kraft site has a food planner. www.kraftfoods.com . You
need to register (it's free) and then fill out the lifestyle questionnaire
and it will give you a weekly menu based on your calorie needs, lifestyle,
and body type. If there are any meals that you don't like you can edit them.
It also lets you print out a weekly grocery list that you can edit and take
with you to the store.

Thanks for the site. I've used it before but didn't realize they had a
weekly menu planner.

Welcome, Paul! Let me give you one very small piece of advice
that I consider important -- different plans work for different
people. Don't feel as though you need to justify your plan (once
you have one) to anyone! This is a great group, but naturally
there are a couple of "my way is the only way" types who nearly
drove me out in the beginning.

People who will be a lot of help (IMHO) include Dally, Beverly,
Chris, Laurie, Jenn, and Janice (forgive me if I missed anyone).
They don't pull punches, but (sometimes bluntly) tell it like it
is -- and they actually know what they're talking about.

At your weight, small changes will make a big difference; your
walking goals sound great! Congrats on seeing a problem and
wanting to fix it, you've done great just by taking the first
step...

That's great to hear - that you'll be staying around. You will find it
helpful in the long run. It sounds like from your original message that
you're taking things one step at a time which will probably lead to more
success in the long run. Best of luck to you!
