Early in South Beach phase II, eating small amount of noodles caused problems
I finished phase I fine and began phase II. At some point during phase
II I went out with friends to eat a hibachi dinner. I ordered chicken & shrimp and veggies and ate a small amount of brown rice. Before the meal was ended the server gave me a small portion of cooked noodles, which I sampled. When I swallowed the mouthful of noodles (probably too much in one gulp) I experienced (1) difficulty swallowing, and (2) dizziness during and after the swallow. The dizziness lasted just a few seconds and did not return. I also knew I had eaten too many carbs because that night I woke up in the middle of the night with leg cramps, a symptom I'm now familiar with. Can anyone relate to these symptoms (difficulty swallowing and dizziness)? I'm thinking of speaking to my MD about it, but until I get to see him I'm concerned. Thanks in advance for your comments. |

My first thought is that it has nothing to do with the noodles and could be a reaction to something else you had already eaten in the meal. Some people report that MSG causes an assortment of symptoms, if they are sensitive to it. From any nutritional standpoint, eg carbs, those noodles could not have done anything because the effect was instantaneous, before they had even begun to digest. It's also very possible, probably likely, that whatever happened had nothing to do with what you were eating at all. It may be nothing, but I would definitely get checked out, including an EKG. |

Are you allergic to peanuts? Perhaps the noodles, or something else you ate, triggered an allergic reaction because of being cooked/prepared in peanut oil, cross-contamination, etc. Yes, just to play it safe, it wouldn't hurt to see a doctor. -- Dogman "I have approximate answers and possible beliefs in different degrees of certainty about different things, but I'm not absolutely sure of anything" - Richard Feynman |

The dizziness lasted just a few seconds and did not return. On the one hand that does sound like an allergic reaction. On the other hand as it only lasted a few seconds it's probably something else. How big was the gulp? I've tried to swallow a big gulp and I've felt the lump moving slowly down my throat. It's possible for such a lump to interfere with blood flow for a few seconds and cause dizzyness. Might be what happened. I also knew I had eaten too many carbs because that night I woke up in the middle of the night with leg cramps, a symptom I'm now familiar with. It's more common for leg cramps to come from a sudden reduction in carb intake and be a temporary effect. Interesting personal difference in reactions. Can anyone relate to these symptoms (difficulty swallowing and dizziness)? I'm thinking of speaking to my MD about it, but until I get to see him I'm concerned. When in doubt get it checked out. |
