Questions from a newbie
Hi there,
I have begun the induction process of Atkins and I had a couple of questions. 1. What is the cost of a splenda drink such as Diet Rite. It of course reads zero but I know better. 2. Where on earth do you find nitrate nitrite free lunch meat, bacon, sausage? I live in Southwest Virginia and even the health food store doesn't carry it. Oh, I could have them order it for a ridiculous price like 7.99 for 10 ounces. 3. I have read the book and it states you can follow induction till you have lost all the weight you want. Do you continue after the first two weeks to leave out nuts, low-carb bread, wine, etc. Or can you include these if your daily carb intake is still 20 or below? 4. Can you replace a cup of atkins bake with 3/4 c of soy flour and 1/4 c gluten? 5. I find his products pricey and wondered if there are substitutes and where I might find them. Thank you in advance for your time. Marianne |

It really is zero. 2. Where on earth do you find nitrate nitrite free lunch meat, bacon, sausage? I live in Southwest Virginia and even the health food store doesn't carry it. Oh, I could have them order it for a ridiculous price like 7.99 for 10 ounces. It's hard to find, but possible. However, I tend to stick with sausages from Costco, which generally don't have added nitrite/ates. Lunch meat: stick with roast beef, etc. 3. I have read the book and it states you can follow induction till you have lost all the weight you want. Do you continue after the first two weeks to leave out nuts, low-carb bread, wine, etc. Or can you include these if your daily carb intake is still 20 or below? I did induction for several weeks, then just started adding in carbs of the vegetable and nut kinds. 4. Can you replace a cup of atkins bake with 3/4 c of soy flour and 1/4 c gluten? 5. I find his products pricey and wondered if there are substitutes and where I might find them. There are substitutes. I prefer natural, whole foods and no "fake" foods. I'm even beginning to make my own sausage. Minimize the fake foods for now. Thank you in advance for your time. Marianne -- Bob M in CT Remove 'x.' to reply |

Questions from a newbie
I stayed on induction levels for three months and dropped 60 pounds.
Then I relaxed a bit and had the weight come off slower. I don't and never have used the nitrateless products. I am in BFE eastern texas. I was damn lucky to find low carb tortillias at the nearest Krogers. I didn't use any Aktins products, it seemed a little to "Jenny Craig" to me. But a lot of folks here do. To each his own. It was important to me to choose a plan that included everyday food that I loved and would eat anyway. I am done with OWL and now am learning how to comfortably maintain my new relationship with food. Those are the only things I am fit to addess from your post. Someone with all the answers will surely post. I wish you well, and be patient with yourself. |

Questions from a newbie
"MJ" wrote in message m... Hi there, I have begun the induction process of Atkins and I had a couple of questions. 1. What is the cost of a splenda drink such as Diet Rite. It of course reads zero but I know better. Manufacturers get to use the totally carb free version of splenda. So if it says zero, count it as zero. 2. Where on earth do you find nitrate nitrite free lunch meat, bacon, sausage? I live in Southwest Virginia and even the health food store doesn't carry it. Oh, I could have them order it for a ridiculous price like 7.99 for 10 ounces. Soak regular nitrate laden stuff in water, and rinse. Removes most if not all of the nitrates. 3. I have read the book and it states you can follow induction till you have lost all the weight you want. Do you continue after the first two weeks to leave out nuts, low-carb bread, wine, etc. Or can you include these if your daily carb intake is still 20 or below? Induction is basically an elimination diet to help you find food triggers, so sticking to the food list is as important if not more important than the 20g rule, if you plan to do induction. You don't have to. You can skip right to OWL and eat all those lowcarb foods that aren't on the induction list, and even stay at 20g if you want, but if you can lose at 40g (for instance) why stay at 20g? It won't make you lose any faster to stay much lower than your maximum, and reduces your variety. 4. Can you replace a cup of atkins bake with 3/4 c of soy flour and 1/4 c gluten? Yes. There are several 'homemade bake mixes' posted to the group, which are much cheaper to make than buying those boxes. Google for the various recipes. 5. I find his products pricey and wondered if there are substitutes and where I might find them. Thank you in advance for your time. Good luck. revek |

"MJ" wrote in message m... Hi there, I have begun the induction process of Atkins and I had a couple of questions. 1. What is the cost of a splenda drink such as Diet Rite. It of course reads zero but I know better. I would not do Slenda, no matter the cost. Do LC and your sweet tooth will disappear, at least for the first couple of months. 2. Where on earth do you find nitrate nitrite free lunch meat, bacon, sausage? I live in Southwest Virginia and even the health food store doesn't carry it. Oh, I could have them order it for a ridiculous price like 7.99 for 10 ounces. All that lunch meat is fat. Nirates? Forget about it. Just eat it. But eat more tuna and turkey for lunch. 3. I have read the book and it states you can follow induction till you have lost all the weight you want. Do you continue after the first two weeks to leave out nuts, low-carb bread, wine, etc. Or can you include these if your daily carb intake is still 20 or below? Most folks can't follow induction during induction. That is why most people in this group are fat (read obese). 4. Can you replace a cup of atkins bake with 3/4 c of soy flour and 1/4 c gluten? Yes, but forget that crap. 5. I find his products pricey and wondered if there are substitutes and where I might find them. The LC foods are pricy and usually loaded with carbs. Do this if you want to lose weight sanely. 1. Cut your calories in half 2. Eat low-glyecmic carbs. Stone ground bread, whole wheat pasta, and some sweet potatoes. 3. Exercise. So when you go off the WOE, at least you have some money in the bank. Thank you in advance for your time. Marianne |

One thing I have learned from many people is: 1. drink enough water--at least 128 oz minimum 2. STAY AWAY from most if not all Atkins and low carb products because they have hidden carbs and most people gain from them. Some are beneficial like Thick/Not Thin thickener or the TVP (texurized veg protein). 3. go to health food stores or Co-ops to find the alternatives. Just ask, they know what you will be looking for. Good luck Marianne! lowcarb_newbie 400/352/173 |
