You've consistently asked for people's opinions on short-term rapid
weight loss techniques. It should come as no surprise that there are
some negative opinions. You've reacted in a somewhat hostile way to
those opinions. This is understandable, but it may not be
appropriate.

I'd suggest googling old posts in order to get into the spirit of
things here. Frankly, this group's hardline attitude on diet and
excersize (sp) is what's kept me committed to finding long-term
healthy habits.

Also, you really don't have the right to tell Neil why he's bent out
shape. He's worked pretty damn hard at this, and I'm betting it would
be a little irksome to listen to someone who doesn't seem to be
willing to listen to good advice.

Neil is forthright, but he's far from snotty.

Hi Binky,

Thanks for the spirited defense. But I wouldn't say I am irked by Ms.
Snotty Booger's comments. How can I be irked by the expected? You've
unfortunately described her correctly.

Let me add that I certainly don't wish her ill; in fact, I wish her
luck in losing weight.

I agree
with long term weight loss and how to maintain it-- I am a little more
dire in my situation based on my medical and physical problems and
limitations... I am also hypotensive and working with a doctor to try and
regulate my thyroid at the same time of grasping at straws to find
something that will work for me in the interim. Losing weight is next to
difficult for me. sorry I do not fit into a mold of "just eat sensible,
exercise and you will lose weight". That is harder for some people.

If rapid loss is your aim then try a low-calorie high-protein diet. Check
with your Dr. first. I too am hypothyroid making weigh loss more than
difficult. I found that cutting carbs to the bone and walking 2 miles at
least 6 days a week (I skip the days I'm on my feet all day or when I mow
the lawn) works best for me. It's also a diet I can stick with and quite
healthy all things considered. For example last night my midnight snack was
a plate of celery, mushrooms and a sliced, lightly salted cucumber. Much
less calories than my usual 400c bagel w/butter. For dinner I had a baked
fish fillet with spinach and yellow squash. Much less calories then having
a juicy steak with a buttered baked potato, bread and fat-flavored greens.
You get the idea.

Angie, we never said it was easy. We said that's what you have to do.

Either do it or don't do it. You don't get any other choices. It
doesn't matter that it's hard, or even if it is harder for you than
anyone else. If you want to lose the fat you have to fit yourself into
the mold of "just eat sensible, exercise and you will lose weight."

Because that is the ONLY answer.

You get to decide. Do you want to lose fat bad enough to do what it
takes? If not, please leave.

Do you plan to do this the rest of your life? Are you just trying to lose
a few pounds and then go back to your regular eating habits?
It seems a waste of time and money unless you have a plan to stick to from
now on.

My goal RIGHT NOW is to get weight off the fastest way possible because of
some physical and medical ailments I have. Then I will worry about
contining to lose weight, and keeping the weight off long term. I need help
right now and fast.

What did you eat today?

What exercise did you do today?

I agree. And I plan on daily exercise. I don't plan on using this
long term. I am in the RIGHT NOW mindset because I have medical
(hypertension) and physical problems (bad back, knees and foot
problems) all because of excess weight. I need to lose weight
fastest possible. Then I will worry about continued weight loss and
keeping it off.

The faster you lose weight the higher the
percentage of it will be lean mass (muscle).
That's a bad thing.

The fastest way to lose weight while sparing
muscle is low carb (Atkins, Protein Power,
etc.). Drop down to 600-800 calories a day
with about 10% of it being carbohydrate.
In the beginning, low carb causes a good
deal of water loss. That immediately (within
2 weeks) reduces your blood pressure due to
a beneficial drop in blood volume.

Even fasting won't get fat off of you faster
than low carb. Fasting will cause a larger
decrease in scale weight over the same period
of time, but more of it will be muscle and
less of it will be fat.

The other important thing is to do serious
resistance exercise. No foo-foo, light weight,
high repetition, read a magazine while you
relax on a machine, stuff. You need to do
the real thing to spare muscle while losing
fat. Forget the aerobic work while you're
doing this. Aerobic work increases muscle
loss. The resistance work will strengthen
the muscles all over your body and will
likely cause improvement with your other
physical problems.

And of course here's the best link on the

Excellent advice.

I'll bet dollars to donuts she doesn't take it.

No, all you do is whine.

Mmm, cheese.

I doubt many in this group, if any, have tried the SlimFast diet to lose
weight. Most have adopted a reduced calorie diet consisting of regular food
they intend to eat the rest of their lives. In addition to the reduced
calorie diet we've added some type of regular exercise to our program.

I have tried the Slim Fast, and also had a doctor tell me it was a
good diet, but I couldn't stay with it. A liquid diet just didn't
satisfy my hunger at all. It would stay with me maybe an hour then I
was hungry again.... I ended up with weight watchers because it was
more satisfying of my hunger. I also liked that you don't cut out any
of the food groups. It was sloooooow, because I have hypothyroid
problems, but I did get to goal and have been there since the
beginning of March.

Being a little nicer would go a long way with me. What I need is
positiveness, not negative. Do you think your attitude toward me is helping
me any? All it does is upset me... you and queen of cans continue to
ridicule me, not help me.

Slim fast shake for breakfast... mid-morning low-carb yogurt.
Slim fast shake for lunch... mid-afternoon 10 baby carrots.
Dinner: Skinless chicken breast, yellow squash, side salad with vinegrette
dressing.
This evening snack will be a few brazil nuts and a couple celery and cream
cheese sticks.
I walked 1 mile outside at lunch. After work 2 miles on the treadmill, then
some weight machines, then 2 miles on the stationary bike.

What type of serious resistance exercise are you referring to? I'm not sure
if my bad knees can take it, but I'm willing to listen to your suggestions.
