The other important thing is to do serious
resistance exercise. No foo-foo, light weight,
high repetition, read a magazine while you
relax on a machine, stuff. You need to do
the real thing to spare muscle while losing
fat.

What type of serious resistance exercise are you referring to?

Lifting, either with freeweights or machines.

I'm not sure
if my bad knees can take it, but I'm willing to listen to your suggestions.

Then avoid exercises that stress the knees. Work your back and upper
body. Work your core. "Work it baby", as the young people in my office
say. Adding or maintaining muscle will help keep your metabolism
higher, thus helping you to burn off calories faster. And it might
minimize your knee pain as well. I was exercising for three months or
more bofore I started working on my legs, and by then much of the pain
had abated.

You might also find using a recumbent bike is helpful if you have knee
problems. In my case, once the joint warmed up, it felt fine.

Okay. I usually do very little weights, I was afraid of bulking up and
gaining muscle weight (everyone says muscle weighs more). I was given a
weight regime by a trainer back in December, prior to hurting my lower back.
Now that it is better, I'll give that workout a try again starting tomorrow,
and rotate cardio and weight days.

Let me add that I certainly don't wish her ill; in fact, I wish her
luck in losing weight.

Being a little nicer would go a long way with me. What I need is
positiveness, not negative. Do you think your attitude toward me is helping
me any? All it does is upset me... you and queen of cans continue to
ridicule me, not help me.

Angie, if you really think I am "negative", you need to get out more.
You are confusing dolphins with great white sharks. Visit the chess
groups; one guess who is the subject of this zinger:

"The chess-moron has
thought that more vicarious excitement would suit him very well,
whereas he
should get out more and walk off another 100 pounds off his clown-sized
personage."

It does, but it takes forever to build it. Nothing to fear from
lifting.

Allow at least one day off a week. And expect to be sore for a few
days.

It's really tough for a woman to develop large bulky muscles unless they
devote hours to it each day. Muscle weight is what you want instead of fat
weight. A pound of muscle and fat will weigh the same but the muscle is
less in volume. You should be trying to maintain your muscle while dieting.

No it doesn't. A pound weighs a pound.

By the way, I went to my thyroid specialist today, he asked me if I have
ever considered gastric bypass. I thought it odd for an endocrinologist to
be pushing weight loss procedures instead of giving me diet/fitness advise.
He sent me for additional lab tests today to test other possible problems
with my thyroid or possible cushings disease. Anyways, I told him I was not
ready for something so drastic as bypass.

No it doesn't. A pound weighs a pound.

I was thinking volume, not weight.
