Default Sweet fix

Hello all !
What do you do when you have a calling for something sweet. What will help
to get rid of it?

Whack yourself on the side of the head with a hammer. You'll be in
so much pain you'll forget about eating sweets.

The knowledge that I allow myself a sugary treat from time
to time. That, 10 minutes, some water or tea, and a few
minutes spent reflecting on my goals usually tames any
craving.

Bake a cheesecake using the low carb recipe. Have a few approved
berries to go with it.
However, that take a bit of planning. For a quick fix sugar-free
popsicles work.

Default Sweet fix -also for chocolate

We have a tumbler full of semi-sweet chocolate chips.
The rule is: NEVER more than two, and not often. !
Savor them... Keep the flavor in your mouth for a while.

But there are two kinds of people, and I'm aware that for the
other kind this is simply a trigger for a binge!

But it does work for us.

In the long run feeding a sweet tooth will keep it strong, starving
it will help it gradually weaken. So I try something else than a
replacement.

I don't know if I believe that. When I had my daughter (1987), I was
borderline diabetic during pregnancy and as a result ate no processed sugar
for 4-5 months. The only thing I really missed was chocolate and that was
one of the first things I ate after I delivered. I can live without all the
sweets - but I won't live without chocolate - if it is sugar free low carb
stuff - great. I will occassionally make some SF chocolate pudding.

I usually need something sweet after something savory (meal). It can
usually be sated by fruit or lemonade (no sugar). If I really feel the
need for something else I use Atkins bars or I have a cup of sugar-free
Intl. Coffee's Swiss Mocha with a good dash of cream. That hits the spot.

It clearly isn't true for everyone, though it may be for some. I have never,
ever lost my desire for something sweet after a nice dinner, no matter how
long I've gone without sugar. I've read that humans are somewhat genetically
programmed to go after sweet things, as originally they generally came
packaged (by nature) along with lots of vitamin C, other antioxidants and
micronutrients... as, say, berries or fruit.

My philosophy in doing lc has generally been to adapt, rather than to fight
urges like that. So when I'm really craving something sweet, usually after a
meal, I just have one. I just make sure it's lc, often something
artificially sweetened, or with berries or some other lc fruit plus whipped
cream or whole milk yogurt. Sometimes I make an "official" lc dessert,
though not often. Once in a while I'll make a recipe of Atkins bread from
the bake mix, adding a little as and cinnamon, maybe some chopped nuts. Then
I'll use a square of that, split, to make shortcake with sliced strawberries
and some whipped cream. Really good... luxurious even.

But... more often I'll just make a big mug of tea or decaf and add as and
cream, or a flavored syrup for the decaf.

It seems that at these moments it's not the sucrose-fructose my body needs,
but rather the flavor. And artificial sweeteners, or the very modest amounts
of natural sugars in lc fruit, seem to satisfy that need. You just need to
figure out what works for YOU.
