I've heard it both ways. Saccharin has been in use since the early nineteen
hundreds with no problems and saccharin is a poison that makes you fat.
Anyone have an opinion on this artificial sweetner? I'd be lost without it
at this point since I put it in smoothees that would otherwise be pretty
flavorless in my opinion.

The same can be said for sugar, but its been around a lot longer.

Sugar has calories. Sugar has been proven to kill. My brother had diabetes,
a sugar-related disease, and died at the age of 44 because of it.

I don't know anybody, or even know of anybody, who has died from saccharin.
It has zero calories or pretty damn close to that. There are no saccharin
related diseases of which I am aware.

There is *so*much* hype on the Internet. Don't fall for it. Pick a sweetener
or go with unsweetened. Stay away from the sugar where you can 'cause too
much of that WILL kill you.

Saccharin and Cyclamates complement each other in taste.

The studies in the 50's that showed rat bladder problems have been debunked,
as (I'm told) rat urinary systems are different than human.

Saccharin does not make you fat. The issue is safety, and the data is
uncertain.

Well sorry. I just got this book out of the library by Kevin Trudeau and he
said it was poison, but on reading more of his book today it seems to be
just one bullet point after another of shocking "facts". According to him,
all of congress, the senate, the food companies, drug companies and doctors
are corrupt and in it together to make people fat and sick. lol

He's a raging alarmist. His book has already sold five million. It's a
paperback about two inches thick. Probably had to defoliate 6000 acres of
primal forest to publish it.

I've seen that guy figuratively torn open by many reporters. Word is, he's a
fraud. He's claimed to be an expert in many fields. About every 5-10 years,
he comes out with another jewel about how corrupt this person is, and how
they're all lying... It's all a conspiracy... just so he can pocket another
big fat check.

A quick search of the internet produced a lot of info about him. He spent a
couple years in jail for larceny. He's banned by the FTC from making
infomercials on tv. He can still peddle his bull**** in books, but only if
his books aren't selling product. He used to be an expert on memory, taught
memory courses. He's being sued by some of his students because he sells
their addresses. They say he targets people who are conspiracy minded and
prone to magical thinking. He's a genius marketer who'll do anything to make
money.

I was a little shocked that his book was in the library. I'm against book
burning, but if the guy has as bad a reputation as this guy, he shouldn't be
getting a prominent display in a public library. They used to put all the
UFO books up prominently too.

Use in moderation if it's useful to you and don't worry over much
about it is my take.

Personally, there seem to be WAY too many people who are rabidly
alarmed over artificial sweeteners. Yet, where is the same indignation
when it comes to trans-fats... which really ARE proven to be harmful?

Where is the indignation over refined sugar, which is eaten to such
excess these days that children are coming down with diabetes in
rapidly growing numbers?

Saccharin is by far my least favorite of the big three: I like Equal
best, followed a close second by Splenda, followed way down by
saccharin. I would use Saccharin if I had health concerns about the
other two or if nothing else was available though. It just leaves a
bitter aftertaste for me. I think all three are very safe. I eat a LOT
of artificial sweetner...about 100 packs a day or equivalent if you
include the sugar free stuff I eat like diet pop and sugar-free syrup,
sugar free pudding, etc. I like my cereal, diet pop (at least 10 cups
a day) and meringues. Since I am vegetarian, I eat 10 egg whites a day
to get protein...I make a sugar-free meringue with them using 25 packs
of Splenda. Then I eat them with a little sugar free Smuckers.
Probably too much, I know, but I don't plan to change since it helped
me lose 95 pounds and keep it off. I'll be the guinea pig (gladly). If
I drop dead, I'll be sure and warn everybody.

Hooked on the stuff and loving it. dkw

Oh ya, almost forgot. Each packet of artificial sweetner has roughly 4
calories, so I am still getting about 400 cal a day from all the
sweetner. That would escalate to 3200 calories if it were sugar,
though. Since I only consume 1900 cal per day, that wouldn't work out
too well. dkw

That's interesting to know. I did have some adverse effects from big
servings of Equal. It used to be my favorite artificial sweetner. Of course
it's nothing scientific, but I thought I narrowed down my problem to equal.
