Default A small problem

This is sort of a strange thing but the last few of times that I've done a
long workout (30 minutes on treadmill, 30 min on recumbent bike and trying
to do 30 on elliptical) my sweat has started burning the area under my eyes.
Since the first time it happened, I've made sure that there's no makeup or
any kind of moisturizer or wrinkle therapy cream on my face. It only
happens when I've been sweating heavily for a while (at least an hour) and
then it only burns the under eye area especially the left eye. I've started
trying to drink more water both while I'm exercising and just during the day
and I stopped yesterday when I started feeling the sting. I went and rinsed
my face off and tried to cool down so I'd stop sweating but the damage was
already done. I have a angry red blotch stretching from the corner of my
left eye to my noise almost and an inch the other direction. The redness
under the right eye didn't get as bad and it's already gone away. Anyone
have any ideas why this is happening and what else (besides not working out
at all) I could do about it?

I get this with sunscreen on my face. If you apply it once its ok,
but then I sweat and when you reapply or the area then gets wet it
stings like the dickens.

I just wash my face clean and don't use anything on that area.

Possibly keep a clean, damp or wet towel handy to whip the sweat off
with during your workouts. Keep the area clean of sweat and buildup.

I have been using a dry towel to wipe the sweat off but it seems that once
the acidic sweat starts even a little bit burns my skin. I'm going to try a
damp wash cloth along with the towel. I'll have to keep the wash cloth in a
plastic bag because I don't think the gym would like me dripping a lot of
water on the machines! I also bought some terry cloth head bands to put on
my forehead to stop some of the run-off from there. I just don't understand
why with absolutely nothing on my face that this is happening and why it
only happens after I've been sweating for a while.

I don't know what it is, but I have the same problem. My eyes have gotten
very sensitive and sometimes I wonder if it could be that because I sweat a
lot and thus use the gym towel to wipe my face, maybe I am sensitive to the
detergent they use. Naturally, I've done nothing to prove this true or
false, because it is just easier to use their towel, but I am fighting an
annoying rash in the eye area. It could just be sweat, too. I am going to
a dermotologist next week, for another reason, and intend to ask her what is
up. Good luck.

I use a towel from home and if I had developed an allergy to the detergent I
think I'd have a rash in other sensitive areas ;-0 I hope that I just
haven't been drinking enough water. So I'm greatly upping my intake and
I'll see what happens. Another idea a friend had is that the heavy sweating
is bringing out toxins and I'll eventually de-tox and it'll stop. I think
that idea sounds a little bogus.

You don't have to avoid working out at all, just don't work out for over
an hour at a time. The painful sweat may be because you're sweating
ammonia. You're probably burning muscle from those excessively long
cardio workouts. Why not up the intensity and cut back on the time?

Hello Tonia,

I have the same problem at times. I get an ammonia smell sometimes after
a long workout on my stair climber and such. I've had problems in the past
when I use to run where my sweat would drench my shirt and while running the
shirt would brush my nipples and make one or both bleed. I think it has
something to do with salt content or something in the sweat, though I'm not
sure of this. Maybe drinking lots of water will resolve the problem. If
you find a solution let me know so I can test it out.

I'm just glad to know I'm not the only one who's experienced this,

Paul

Ammonia is a byproduct of protein breakdown. It means you're burning
muscle. Your workouts are probably too long.

The solution is not to do so much freakin cardio. You may think you're
burning fat, but if you smell ammonia, you're burning muscle.

Interesting. The few times I've noticed this, I thought one of the
cats must have peed on my leggings :-).

I didn't smell ammonia and I'm sensitive to the smell. I asked my DH worked
out at the same time (on the Saturday after XMas) as I did when it was the
worst (my skin actually peeled a bit after a couple of days), and he doesn't
remember smelling ammonia. I think I will cut back to 20 minutes on each
machine for an hours workout total. I hadn't been working out on my non-gym
days very regularly but I think I will put in a little ski machine time to
compensate for the shorter Tues, Thurs, Sat workouts. Thanks.

How about doing some weight work instead of more cardio? The ski machine is
more cardio.
