Default Woohooo...the "Atkins" dieter in the Dateline Quincy High Reunion Lost the Most - By Far!!!

1978 classmates weigh in with 'Dateline' 300 pounds lighter

I bet all the others wished they had done low-carb too! Kalish

QUINCY - There were the usual exclamations of ''You look so different!''
heard at a 25th high school reunion. And, six members of the Quincy
High/Vocational Technical Class of '78 were wired for sound to catch the
full refrain.
The three women and three men accepted a challenge from ''Dateline NBC''
in January to lose significant weight by their 25th reunion this month.
Each was at least 30 pounds overweight; each followed a different diet
plan, including hypnosis and marathon training. The final weigh-in came
Friday, just before the reunion at the Lantana in Randolph. ''Dateline''
crews recorded it all as the slimmed-down six showed off their new looks.
''These are what I started out in,'' Eleanor Vallier-Talbot said as she
held up the size 28 brown slacks she wore Jan. 18 when she checked in at
300 pounds. Looking proud and happy, Vallier-Talbot is 57 pounds lighter
and wears a size 22. The meteorologist wants to reach her high school
weight of 180. ''Keep going! Keep going,'' urged admiring classmates.
Their stories have been updated on ''Dateline'' programs in April and
July, and the final segment, with footage from the reunion, will air Nov.
23.
About 400 people attended the reunion, double the turnout for previous
events, and Kathy Walsh-Wynters, the reunion co-chairwoman, attributed the
increase partly to the ''Dateline'' publicity.
''I know all six who lost the weight and they look great,'' said Stephanie
Coose, Class of 1979, who married Richard Coose, president of the Class of
1978. ''To go on TV and do all that they did is wonderful.''
All together, the six lost nearly 300 pounds in nine months. Richard
Burnes Jr., a former high school athlete, lost the most: 108 pounds.
''Dateline'' paid for each person to follow a different weight-loss
program. All six credited the ''Dateline'' support with helping them stick
to their programs.
''We worked hard to select weight-loss programs where each one was doing
something they wanted to do,'' said producer Susan Adams. ''It has been
really powerful to watch them go through a life transformation.''
''Dateline'' will contact them in about a year to see how they are doing
for a follow-up program, she said.
''I wanted to lose a little more, but I feel great, and it seems like this
is where I'm meant to be,'' said Marc Merlis, who lost 35 pounds to weigh
in Friday at 210 pounds. His weight started to creep back up during the
summer, but he got back on track by listening to motivational tapes that a
hypnotist provided and resumed workouts at a health club.
''It was not easy to do!'' he said.
Vallier-Talbot said her rings and shoes are too big since she lost 57
pounds, but she feels great. ''I don't have as much fatigue,'' she said.
She followed the ''8 Minutes a Day'' strength training program of Jorge
Cruise. ''Dateline'' sent her to San Diego twice to see him and work on
emotional issues that led to over-eating.
Burnes confessed to having mixed emotions about his accomplishment because
he wonders what comes next. ''It's all been excuses over last 10 years,
letting food and alcohol take a bigger role than it should have, and now I
have the maintenance program,'' he said. ''I want to believe that I will
do it.'' Burnes followed the Atkins diet and also took up exercising.
Lynn Passalacqua Frank lost 35 pounds through a major lifestyle change.
The mother of seven had never run at all but followed an intense exercise
program. In September, she ran in and finished the Maui marathon in
Hawaii. She finished the Maui marathon in ''five hours, 23 minutes and 19
seconds.''
''I feel much more energetic and all around, I just feel more content,''
she said. ''I seem to be in a better mood all the time.''
The hardest point came in June when she injured her knee. ''I got two
weeks behind in training and that scared me,'' she said.
Kathy Walsh-Wynters lost 40 pounds by joining a Weight Watchers program
and exercising. ''I am thrilled with the program I followed and the
''Dateline'' coverage, having cameras follow me, was the impetus I needed
to feel good,'' she said.
Former star athlete Mark Giordani had major back surgery in the spring and
found no relief from the incessant pain; still, he managed to curb his
eating with a Slim Fast diet and walking when he could, losing 20 pounds.
''If I walk more than two days in a row, I'm in agony,'' he said.
He described the change in eating habits as ''one of the toughest things
I've ever done'' and looked forward to a one-day reward on Saturday: going
to a new restaurant near his Quincy home and ''ordering everything on the
left side of the menu.''
How the Quincy classmates shed pounds
Here's how the six members of the Class of 1978 at Quincy High/Vocational
Technical School did following their ''Dateline NBC'' weight loss plans
for nine months:
*** Richard Burnes Jr: Married with three sons, Burnes lives in Falmouth and
works the night shift for the U.S. Postal Service in Brockton. In January,
he weighed 328 pounds. At weigh in on Friday, he was 108 pounds lighter.
He followed the Atkins diet and exercised a few times a week. ****
Lynn Passalacqua Frank: The mother of seven lives in Walden, N.Y., with
her husband and works as an interior designer. She weighed 174 pounds in
January. She lost 35 pounds. She took up an intense exercise program,
began running and ran a marathon in Hawaii on Sept. 2.
Mark Giordani: He lives with his wife, two sons and a daughter in Quincy.
A former high school athlete, he had major back surgery in the spring for
a ruptured disk and is still in considerable pain. He weighed 230 pounds
in January. He now weighs 210 pounds. He followed the Slim Fast diet and
walked and did light workouts when he could.
Marc Merlis: The former high school football player is married, has two
children and works as a baker. In January, he weighed 245 pounds. He has
dropped 35 pounds. He had tried diet plans before but always gained back
what he lost. This time, he followed a regular exercise program, underwent
hypnosis, listened to motivational tapes, and ate more frequent, smaller
meals and gave up fast food.
Eleanor Vallier-Talbot: She works as a meteorologist, is married and lives
in Taunton. In January, she weighed 300 pounds. She lost 57 pounds. She
worked with an online weight-loss coach, Jorge Cruise, based in
California, followed his strength-training program, and joined his support
group.
Kathy Walsh-Wynters: A former cheerleader and homecoming queen, she lives
in Waltham, is married, has two children and works in marketing and real
estate. She joined the Weight Watchers program and would not disclose her
weight before or after, but lost 40 pounds.
