Has anyone else noticed the similarities?
and this is very fascinating because our leaders ask the questions that make
you think, and they deal with subjects like binge eating, boredom eating and similar. I guess the difference is that we talk about the behavior, and what emotions are present sad, lonely and so on but no one person is singled out. Lee Joyce wrote in message ... Hi all, I was just on Dr.Phil's web site and I was reading a little bit about his "Weight Loss Solution". I find that it sounds so much like WW's program. He says write down everything you eat in your food journal, drink lots of water, do decaf instead of caffeinated, eat fruits & veggies & exercise. Sure sounds like WW's to me. Has anyone else noticed the similarities? Is anyone doing Dr.Phil's "Weight Loss Solution"? Take care, SPOONS 178/156/140 WW's Goal 158, Lifetime Jan 2004 Personal Goal 140, Lost: 22 lbs My photo food log http://www.fotolog.net/giggles Only difference IMO is that he seems to be able to address and make people acknowledge why they got so overweight in the first place.. Which is similar to WW, but I don't think the meeting setting in WW ever made me think about why I ate when I was happy, sad, bored, tired, etc... But, I am a Dr Phil devotee so maybe I just can't see through him objectively.. Kelly in Oz Well, that may be a big part of it. WW does not throw very much psychological accounting into things altho, it does crop up indirectly and through meetings. But whereas Dr Phil is probably a more one-on-one shrink/counselor, WW's leaders are not. But I don't think WW addresses such issues head-on and does not delve heavily into people's flaws!!!! My thoughts exactly! If a ww meeting were aired on television, no one would tune in - it holds no entertainment value. Television shows are going for ratings. I'm sure thousands of overweight people are weeded out in order to just find one that would make a good television rating candidate. I doubt I ever would have made it on the show, don't have anything that Dr. Phil could delve deep enough into or would be interesting to any others. Overweight mom who wasn't abused in childhood, didn't eat her way to bury those feelings ... no good entertainment value there. g I haven't been to a ww meeting, but I doubt they have the time to get into each persons individual character flaws to find what drove them to eat (if anything did). I've heard others say that it has been touched on, but in a more general dosage. Guess it then is up to the individual to do the work to delve further inside themselves to find answers and get the help they need/want. Dr. Phil is an hour long television show, that more than likely takes several hours to tape. Meetings and interviews are held beforehand, I would be willing to bet that much more individual time is spent to get to the *good stuff* and air it publicly. To me, this goes right back to the original *is it similar to ww*. Yup! Even with the pychological thing. Not everyone who is into the Dr. Phil diet is going to receive individual counseling to solve their problems, but since HE suggests you dig inside yourselves, they will. Yet ww taps into the same idea, briefly, yet everyone seems to ignore it. Joyce |

I like this analogy, and if you want to put it in those terms, he is like
individual therapy and WW is like group therapy, Lee Amberle3 wrote in message ... Now understand that this is coming from someone who hasn't been to a WW meeting in 15+ years, and hasn't read Dr. Phil's book.... I think that the basics of it are incredibly similar. I think that the difference lies in Dr. Phil's more obvious focus on the internal dialogs and struggles that one faces when approaching weight loss. As someone with a psychology degree myself I'm a big fan of the "have to know where you've been to know where you're going" theory. I think that Dr. Phil's program is essentially WW with psychological self-assessment as an entree instead of a side dish. We've seen it before, people who swear that the WW program didn't "work" for them. Of course it works for them. They didn't work for them. They weren't mentally in a place they were able to fully commit to the program.
