Speaking of (possibly) kind of silly... what happened to the rest of that

He got hit by a car (two years ago this month, actually) and lost one of

Oh my goodness! I thought maybe it was a cat who was around 3/4 of the

I've heard it sometimes takes cats who lose a limb a bit to adjust to a

Anyway, glad to hear the cat has adapated!

I slowly saw my weight creep up, from about 280 in college to 300, then
310, 317, etc... and eventually I reached 385. I knew what to do; in my
case my self esteem was so low that I simply accepted that I didn't
deserve to be thin. I don't feel that way now. :-)

Funny thing about milestones, the way the context they move into
depending on which side of them you're on. I remember thinking "I may
be big, but at least I'm not 350 lbs". Now, I *WISH* I was 350 lbs
again.

Sorry for my delay in responding. I've been without water and electric
for three days. I'm back now, though:

The secret of logging your intake isn't so much to track it as to force
you to think about it in the first place. I still remember my first
attempts; during them I discovered my "light" eating was about 4000
calories a day. That soon changed. :-)

The first day I logged ( it was last week) was 2600 calories, and I
thought it was a pretty bad day (since it included a run through the
mcdonalds scarf-n-barf). I didn't even think about logging it until
after I got home. I was surprised it was as low as it was, but I also
knew I was capable of worse overeating.

Are you counting accurately?

2000 calories is too low for someone at 407. I do 2500 myself - or at
least I try to. I often run a couple of hundred over. And I'm still
losing weight on it.

Now here I've got a couple questions- I know not to go to low, since
I'll be ravenous and be more likely to binge, but is there more reason
beyond that to up my intake? Admittedly I've had a tough time staying
under 2000 calories, so I'll probably take your advice, I'm just
curious is all.

If you cut it too much, your body will think there's a famine and lower
your metabolism in an effort to conserve energy. If you come across the
term "starvation mode", now you know what it is.

Make sandwiches or wraps at home and keep them in the car. They will
taste better and be better for you. Baring that, pick up some energy
bars and use them instead. I prefer the sandwich instead, since it's
more filling. Include a banana or apple with it.

I have to combat laziness on that- the drive through is simply too
easy and I'm simply too lazy

I'm lazy too. That's how I became fat. I don't want to be fat, so I
stopped being lazy.

About half my week I spend on the road around the county, and there's
a mcdonald's *right* by the freeway on ramp, so I can blow through
the drive-thru, grab lunch, and be on the freeway to my next client
site in no time flat.

They do have salads.

Strangely enough, I've now noticed the subway
sitting right next to it. The plan is to cash in some convenience for
better eating, since they seem to have some good options.

I like Subway and other such sandwich shops. I try to make good choices
when I visit.

What sort of exercise do you take? When I started, I barely managed 7
minutes on a recumbent bike, and had trouble walking a city block. Last
night, I did 40 minutes of upper body lifting, 20 minutes on the bike,
and 20 minutes on the eliptical trainer. If you just try to change
yourself through diet, you are setting yourself up for failure, in my
humble opinion. Like many, I've been there, and have 'done' that.

Nothing deliberate, mostly work related, busy office-like activity.
Crawling around under desks, hauling computer gear in/out of the car.
Some days I'm nothing more than a desk turd. My job may be changing
soon that will make me more of a desk turd, so I'm going to have to
figure out an excercise plan.

You gotta start somewhere. Start with walking.

Welcome to the group, Binky. While you are here, search for posts by
Matty, a super-sized individual who became less of a man and more of a
man at the same time. He went from 500 pounds to about 250!

I've been lurking. I find that absolutely inspirational, and reading
his sig is one of the big reasons I've decided to do this.

Matty was my inspiration as well.

Best wishes but in haste,
Neil

Whoa! I hope all's well with you now?

Are you counting accurately?

I'm sure I was, but it was likely an abnormally light day. I logged
it before dinner, so I probably ate light as a consequence.

Okay, thanks for the explanation. I had heard about that before, but
it was in the context of not skipping breakfast.

Yeah, that whole thing was the long winded way of saying that I found
subway and should be able to substitude it for the bad stuff

You gotta start somewhere. Start with walking.

Sound advice.

Matty was my inspiration as well.

Neil

He didn't seem to have much trouble with the litterbox, but watching him
learn to balance on the toilet seat was pretty fun (yes, I let my cat
drink out of the toilet - please don't anyone bother lecturing me about
it as he's sixteen and quite set in his ways at this point).

He can't jump as high as he used to, but he still does pretty good. He
runs just as fast as he ever did, but when he walks he does this kind of
"hop-thump" thing. And he falls over if you pet him too hard. But
really, all things considered, he seems pretty damn happy and content.

Oh man, poor kitty!

We've got three cats ourselves- that must have been heartbreaking!

Yeah, it was not at all fun. Fortunately, he had no internal injuries
so it was just a matter of a few surgeries on his hip and leg. The vet
tried to save the leg but he'd lost too much skin; there just wasn't
enough of it left to allow it to knit together enough to heal. It
probably sounds warped, but losing the tail was almost harder to take
than the leg. I knew he could adapt to that pretty well; I had a cat
with a crippled leg when I was young and she did just fine. But Chavo
loved to have his tail pulled so, so much! There's enough of a stub
there to still give him a good yank every now and then, though.

Cool! And I'm not gonna lecture.

My Aunt's cat would only drink when someone would run water in the sink
for her, but when I catsitted, I bought one of those always-running
waterers, and it seems like she's taken to that pretty well.

Cool!

On a semi-related note, I've wondered if there are any special modified
weight charts for people who have lost a limb. I imagine that ranks fairly
low on the list of things of challenges, but still. (Plus I imagine
finding a good exercise routine is even harder in those cases.)

Aside from being fat, yes.

Are you counting accurately?

It's related in that some people skip breakfast to cut calories.

I'm lazy too. That's how I became fat. I don't want to be fat, so I
stopped being lazy.

Let me rephrase that. I started to force myself to not be lazy. Trust
me, I'd love nothing better than to spend a day in bed reading books.
But I know I can't do that.

They do have salads.

I like Subway and other such sandwich shops. I try to make good choices

You will find you will substitute more and more often. If you had asked
me 9 months ago to choose between pepperoni and cheese sandwiches and
salmon fillets.....

You gotta start somewhere. Start with walking.

Sound advice.

Keep us informed of your progress. Stay in touch. ASD seems to have a
high loss rate for morbidly obese males. You CAN do this, "Binky". It's
going to be hard, but the rewards are worth it. I'm already tasting
some of them; I can hardly wait to get them all.

I don't plan on leaving, but my posts may be sporadic- I don't always
get an opporunity
to post every day, but I can usually find time to read the group every
couple days. Just lurking has been pretty inspirational, and has
helped get my head in the right place. I don't plan on walking away
from this place as a resource
