Default Favorite Low Carb Snacks?

Hi Jeff,

Yes, laxatives do make you go- I know. Some people eating the Atkins
Endulge Peanut Butter cups have reported that the sugar alcohols make them
have diarrhea- so far, this hasn't happened to me. However, in the past,
I've had BIG problems with diarrhea during the induction phase of this diet.
Constipation can happen with some while just the opposite happens with
others (like me- argh!).

I asked my GI (I am treated for ulcerative colitis, so he's always
interested in my diet) about the diarrhea, and he said this could be the
result of higher fat intake. Personally, I think it's a loss of fiber, too.
That's the confusing part of the induction diet- it's not real specific on
the amount of veggies- for instance, you can have 3 cups of salad veggies or
you can have 2 cups of salad veggies and 2/3rds of a cup of 10% carb veggies
(string beans, as an example). But how many cup(s) of 10% veggies can you
have if you don't eat any salad veggies.

So, to be on the safe side- I never eat more then 2/3rds of a cup of string
beans (or any of the other 10% carb veggies) per day. I eat no salad. This
is a very low fiber amount- fiber being important in relieving the big "D".

Ergo, I'm planning to take psyllium husk caps which add fiber (they aren't
actually a laxative, per se) to essentially firm things up. If this doesn't
work- I'll probably have to return to WW. (which I lost weight on as well,
but I'm always hungry.

btw- since everyone seems to like to post numbers, here's mine. I'm
guessing what they mean...

200/158/145
Atkins alternating with Weight Watchers since March 2001
(actually did dip to 143 last Spring with WW)

Cheers,
Paul

Laxatives make you go. So does psyllium.... If what you said was all true,
you'd... um... spend the day in the bathroom. Which doesn't sound like
something I'd be trying to help.

Atkins induction sometimes causes constipation (blockage)....

I only wish Diet Rite were sold in Canada... Then I'd be happier. Maybe I
need to run down to Washington (from Vancouver) to load up.

You might try the Atkins Advantage bars. They're pretty DRY (IMHO) but
they're tasty and usually solve my craving for sweets.

I tried the Atkins Endulge peanut butter cups for the first time today-

it's
not for induction (which is where I am) but I was curious. Anyway, I

think
they're terrific! They really taste like candy- so far, no laxative

effect
as reported elsewhere. On the other hand, the induction period of this

diet
always has a laxative effect on me. I'm going to try to fight it with
psyllium husk caps this time around.

As for non prepackaged snacks- I haven't tried any. I like Colby-Jack
cheese cubes- and Diet Rite Orange soda is a MUST!

Very strange. Thanks for explaining that to me. I hadn't heard of anyone
having that problem.

What is your favorite non-prepackaged low-carb snack? I'm looking for
fresher foods, not the very highly priced Atkins or Carbolite type foods,
but normal foods you buy and prepare at home.

I've gotten kind of tired of cheese sticks and celery stuffed with cream
cheese or peanut butter. I'm still trying to lose - not yet on

maintenance
so I need to be especially careful. I don't have a sweet tooth, starch

was
(well, still is) my favorite food group. I'm looking for things that are
crunchy and salty.

I like smoked salmon spread with whipped cream cheese - roll it up and
slice in pinwheels.

Yum, I'll be trying this with some fresh dill sprinkled on the cream cheese
before rolling up.

Perfect! That's how I like my salmon roll-ups, too. mmmmm

The combo also works well with slices of deli turkey or chicken.

I don't really snack much, but often my meals are small and
snack-like.

Stuff I eat:

LC tortillas rolled up around provolone cheese and nuked (instant
quesadilla action)

Hard-boiled eggs cut in half, topped with a half-spoonful of tapenade

Wasa cracker with soft Danish blue cheese

Cold green beans with gorgonzola from the night before

To echo other's ideas a bit...

* Ham spread with whipped cream cheese rolled with a slice of dill
pickle. Eat as is or cut into pinwheels for nicer presentation

* Olives -- cost plus world market has great almond-stuffed green
olives. crunchy (sort of) and definitely salty.

* Kraft twist-ums cheddar and mozzarella string cheese -- for some
reason these are really salty and "dry" tasting cheese, and they are
really good. This is the only string cheese I buy. The off brands of
these are not nearly as good.

* hi-lo cereal from trader joes. Not suitable for induction, but good
mixed with a little bit of whole milk yogurt and a sprinkle of splenda
as a morning snack.

* sunflower seeds, in the hull.

* peanut butter or cream cheese on a wasa crispbread or light rye

Hehe. I ran down to look, and my daughter and I have decided the
same thing. The other brands are not very good at all. Here,
anyway, they are Kraft (in small letters) Polly-O (in big
letters).
