FoodSaver & Salads
Thanks that is exactly what I wanted to know. I will give it a try. I get
tired of having to shop for salad stuff every few days. "Saffire" wrote in message .. . In article o2ckb.70538$vj2.46893@fed1read06, says... Do you use separate bags for each day or just keep resealing one after taking out some salad? And do you totally seal the bag or stop it before? Just wondering if everything gets too crushed? I use a separate bag for each day because I wanted the salad precisely portioned out to account for the carbs. I have an "instant-seal" button on my model, so I start it going, then immediately press the button. It still sucks some of the air out, which is great, but starts sealing within about 3 seconds, so it works out just right. The FIRST time I tried it, just as an experiment, I just let it do it's thing and it sucked the life out of it to the point where the lettuce was unrecognizable and I didn't even want to eat it :-) -- Saffire 205/185/125 Atkins since 6/14/03 Progress photo: http://photos.yahoo.com/saffire333 |

I couldn't tell any difference myself except the 5something has a 3 and 1/4 quart container bundled with it. revek (seriously considering getting one just for salad as I am tired of throwing out ruined lettuce and veggies) |

I put my salads in the large vacuum canister. That way I am not using up the vacuum bags. Plus it won't crush whatever you put inside. With the jar sealer you can use canning jars of various sizes. Using bags all of the time starts to get to be a little expensive. I use bags only for extended storage not for everyday things I may need to get into. YMMV KK |

It is also great for saving that 1/2 of avocado without having it turn
brown. It keeps it for several days What a novel idea! In my house, once an avacado gets cut the whole thing is devoured. I love avacados! I'm also thrilled because walmart had them on sale for 50 cents less per avacado then the other grocery stores!! Susan |

The slicer piece constantly breaks apart, is difficult to put back together and rarely slices evenly across -- scissors are much more reliable for this task and don't take up nearly as much room. I haven't tried the canister/jar attachment yet. It makes a rather rude noise while sucking and sealing, but I can live with that ;-) I got the same model from Costco (same price, etc.), but I have had no problems with my bag cutter. Though I do agree that it takes up too Hmmm. Maybe I should take it back. darned much space! I'm excited to see your results with salad - I hate "aged" lettuce! LOL Did you try your canister for greens at all? I'll try the canister vs. the bags, to see which way I like it. I haven't tried the canister yet. Thanks for the hint (posted later in this thread) about using the Instant Seal when bagging your salad. You're welcome :-) -- Saffire 205/185/125 Atkins since 6/14/03 Progress photo: http://photos.yahoo.com/saffire333 |
