Default Updated "Net Carbs" Page

I've redone the page that discusses "net carbs" on my web site. I've
removed the atkins bar/insulin paragraph that caused so much controversy and
added new material about fiber, European labels, Nut labels, hunger
cravings, and "net carbs" in restaurant food.

I hope that this improves the value of this very popular page (over 10,000
pages hits to date.)

As always, constructive criticism is appreciated.

Thank you Jenny for an excellent page
http://www.geocities.com/jenny_the_bean/products.htm. now I'm doubting the
count on flax seed meal- I haven't been counting it because minis the fiber
the carb count said zero.

I was drinking a low carb drink the other day ( I was working well past my
lunch hour) and read 2 net carbs in the nutritional label, but on the front
of the carton it read , 1 impact carb. I counted 2 carbs.

the most confusing label was a bran fiber cereal, Maybe it was All-bran or
it's competitor. the carbohydrates listed it had fiber, insoluble fiber,
soluble fiber, sugars- I don't have a label, but it really left me
wondering, so I didn't buy it.

My husband is a USDA inspector. One of his contractors manufactures smoked
meat products. They were discussing low carbing and he wanted to list 0 on
the carb count on his bacon..because legally if it is less than 5 g it
doesn't need to be reported. If this is for low carbers, he just lost my
sale. If I see 0 carbs on the label, but sugar in the ingredients, I won't
be able to trust the analysis.

My herbal tea I'm drinking at the moment says, 1 carb a serving. I used 2
tea bags for my big cup. How much is 1+1?????

Probably the best way, but there's something to be said for not sweating
the small stuff.

the most confusing label was a bran fiber cereal, Maybe it was All-bran or
it's competitor. the carbohydrates listed it had fiber, insoluble fiber,
soluble fiber, sugars- I don't have a label, but it really left me

Are you sure that wasn't *.*5 g? Cause, as far as I know, they're not
allowed to round 5 to 0.

doesn't need to be reported. If this is for low carbers, he just lost my
sale. If I see 0 carbs on the label, but sugar in the ingredients, I won't
be able to trust the analysis.

Why not? If the amount of sugar used is small, why couldn't the final
result come out to less 1 g?

My herbal tea I'm drinking at the moment says, 1 carb a serving. I used 2
tea bags for my big cup. How much is 1+1?????

Did you mean more than 1 or less than 1? I know that if you're on
induction that the carb limit is pretty low, but 20 isn't a magic number.
If your tea puts you at 20.75 grams, Dr. Atkins isn't going to reach out
and drag you into the fiery pit of hell. None of this is that precise
anyway. Eat a red pepper with your salad? The USDA nutritional breakdown
gives an average reading for peppers, but yours may have been a little
higher or lower.

It's good to be aware of inaccuracies and underreported carbs, but
honestly why fret over the amount of carbs in a cup of tea?

Martha

Diane,

I agree that there's no reason to obsess about one or two carbs. Where it
gets tricking is when portion sizes have been rounded down to 0 but the
portions themselves are unrealistically small.

For example, you see a lot of 0 gram cream on the market. As a result,
people used to routinely whip up a cup and eat it as free food. In the
earlier editions of Atkins' books he treated cream as a free food too. But
there are 6 grams in a cup of cream.

Powdered Splenda is even worse. The portion size is 1 tsp. There's half a
gram in each teaspoonful though the labels are rounded down to zero. Use
half a cup of Splenda in your baking and you've just added in a lot of
carbs.

With the sugar alcohols, I just count them at the full carb count and don't
deduct. If I'm wrong, it's in the right direction. If I'm right, well no
harm done.
