Default Weightloss inspired changes

Anyone else here find that when they start losing weight, it inspires other
changes in your life and/or appearance?

When I started losing, I got contacts and acryllic nails. I pay more
attention to my hair and makeup. These were always things I wanted, but I
felt like it wasn't worth it to spend money on those details when "the big
picture" was so . . . big. My thought process was "Who's going to even
notice that I have pretty nails if they're busy staring in disgust at my
huge ass?"

I used to project an image of someone who didn't care about her appearance,
someone who didn't care about being feminine, to hide the truth that I
_did_ care about my appearance but I was miserable about it.

There are other changes that are on a less superficial level. Like, I
never would have considered taking a summer job that is so physical
(working at a summer sports camp) before, because I was so out of shape.
I'm still not in great shape, but I can handle it. I don't shirk from
other challenges either. I used to be afraid of new social situations,
constantly worrying "Is anyone there going to like me?" Well, now _I_ like
me, so instead I'll go somewhere new and wonder "Am I going to like anyone
here?"

The little things are actually a big relief though. When you don't have to
worry so much about things like "Is this shirt going to rise up and show my
stomach? Am I too fat to wear a tank top? Will this store have anything
that will fit me?" When you don't have to worry about that stuff anymore,
it frees up an entire area of your brain to think about other, more
important things.

After I lost about 30 pounds I orderred myself some new eyeglasses. It is a
very new style for me.

I bought them online:
http://www.zennioptical.com/index.html

It took about 3 weeks, but it only cost me about $30. The glasses were $19,
plus I orderred anti-reflective for $5, plus shipping.

I am not connected with them in any way, except as a customer.

Yup! Last summer, I bought clothes that were actually cute. And I got my
hair styled. On rare occasions, I even wore make-up. And rings.

I think that weight-loss has a snow-ball effect that affects our entire
lives.

Holy cow! I'm accustomed to paying $300-$400 for glasses (very strong
correction - blind as a bat). I will definitely check this out! Thanks so
much for sharing!

I rediscovered my love for colours that I've enjoyed very much as a child. When
I was five I always plead my mum to buy me more colouring pencils. Now that I'm
a grown up I buy myself eye shadows.

Default A story about my mom's toenails (was: Weightloss inspired changes)

Several years ago my mother had surgery for colon cancer. Sitting at her
bedside before the surgery, I noticed she had beautiful painted toenails.
My mom is the kind of person who dresses up to go get gas, but somehow I
found it surprising that her toenails were painted. She is a large woman,
elderly and arthritic, so I couldn't think of why she would take such care
of something other people don't even see. I thought maybe she'd painted
them because she knew she'd be barefoot in the hospital, but she said no,
she always keeps them painted. I asked her why. Her reply was, "Well, *I*
see them."

I was so touched by that. And as I gazed at her pretty little toenails
peeping out from under the sheet, I thought to myself maybe the surgeon
would notice them, too. Maybe he would see her carefully groomed toenails
and fingernails, and maybe for just a second he would not see her as just
another nameless, faceless, elderly patient. If there came a difficult
moment in the surgery, maybe the pretty nails on her washed-out, lifeless
form would make him pause just for a moment to realize, "This is a person.
A person with a life. A person who cared enough about her life to paint her
toenails." And maybe he would give that tiny extra bit of effort to insure
she survived. In reality, my mom's feet and hands were probably draped and
the surgeon never saw them. But somehow I found the thought that her nails
were painted to be comforting.

Prior to that, I almost never painted my nails. But thinking of how pretty
my mom's toenails were, I started painting mine. And you know what? It
made a difference. No matter where I went or what I did, *I* knew I had
pretty painted toenails. It's hard to feel frumpy and unattractive when you
have Amethyst Rose toenails.

Eventually I started painting my fingernails, too. I love that I can go out
of the house in shocking disarray, but my *nails* will tell the world a
different story. And people REALLY do notice your hands. I've had clerks
at the store be rude and surly and then spot my hands and suddenly their
whole demeanor changes. There is just something about a well-kept hand
which demands respect.

I'm not at my goal weight. I may never be. But by golly, I have nice hands
and feet.

That was a very touching story. Thanks for sharing it.

Your hand looks gorgeous! I have crappy fingernails that peel in layers
long before they can reach an attractive length.

But! I just painted my toenails for the first time in my life, and you and
your mother are right. It feels kinda good. I almost wish I hadn't had my
baby nails removed. This looks a little odd. LOL!

I'm not sure why I have nail polish on hand.
