They are licensed to practice osteopathic MEDICINE.

Hence they are medically trained medical practitioners, who had worse grades in
college than their colleagues who are M.D.s. :-)

Or, as one friend of mine did, it's someone who earned an MD first, then
decided that osteopathy offered her more opportunities to help patients.

She didn't get the DO because she lacked the ability to get into med school;
in fact, she made it into med school at a time when sexism and racism were
widely practiced admissions policies and her pre-med accomplishments were
far better than the vast majority of the men who were her classmates (she
was the only woman in her class). She graduated at the head of her class and
went on to get a DO about ten years later.

This is certainly true!

JC gets some support.

Dr Phil probably gets more because charisma is easier to convey in person or
on video and he's got that "aw shucks, I'm just a country boy" thing going
that makes his message more palatable to more people. Plus he's a good
storyteller.

JC is the stripped down version. Some people prefer stripped down but my
suspicion is that most people prefer the bells and whistles version. Bill
Gates didn't make umpteen bajillion dollars by presenting a lean, efficient,
stable operating system, after all.

So maybe what I'm trying to say is that JC is the Linux version of Dr Phil.

And personally I find them equally unpleasant.

I guess it's a taste thing.

I'm glad it's worked out for you. I've seen exactly one show of

his. I've
seen him numerous times on Oprah though and I have to say his

delivery is
different on Oprah, more harsh. When he's on his own show he's

far less
scornful and more diplomatic.

On a tangent: this does not surprise me.

I know someone who appeared on Oprah as an expert and it was quite

the
eye-opening experience. Her impression of Oprah behind the scenes

was that
of a control freak and something of a bully. Or more accurately,

someone who
totally does not tolerate challenges or surprises on her territory.

My friend had the impression initially that she was going to answer

,
questions, give information, etc (in her area of expertise which was

why the
show flew her in and put her up at quite a nice hotel). Once she was

there
to tape the show, the show's producers were quite directive about

the
details of her delivery, what information she was going to cover,

etc. And
behind the scenes, Oprah was quite different from the warm, open,

welcoming
persona she portrays onstage.

So if Dr Phil was different on Oprah (I don't know, haven't really

watched
either show), my impression is that it would be because that's the

way Oprah
wants it.

And really, Oprah is clearly the expert at what she does...

Har. Yeah. Well it explains the difference. I've formed my
impression of the man though. He triggers all sorts of nasty memes
and bad programming in me. Which I clearly admit is my fault and not
his, but because of my past history, I can't change it without a *lot*
of effort, and frankly I don't think its worth my time, especially as
the information he has is already out there, in other venues. I have
better things to do.

Interesting. Although I wasn't there to witness what my friend
experienced backstage, I did read the extremely specific list of
points she was supposed to cover (in most cases with suggested
wording) she was given by the staff the morning of the taping. At
the end of the list, there was a note to the effect that if she felt
she might deviate from these points, she was to notify Person X on
the staff.

My friend said that had she understood in advance that her
appearance was to be so heavily scripted, she would have declined to
appear.

Wonder what accounts for the difference?

Susan wrote:

That makes absolutely no sense to me.

Most of the education is identical, why wouldn't she just study manipulations
without putting in the years for a D.O.?

Just my take.

Because at the time (mid fifties) that option wasn't available. She
wanted the education and she wanted the degree to prove she had it.
At that time, she had faced considerable prejudice (sexism and
racism) and had learned to super-achieve, cross every T and dot
every I as a defensive measure. She simply accepted that if she
wanted to achieve average success, she would have to put in much
more effort than the average white male. So she did it.

In talking to her it's striking how many things have changed in the
last fifty years. She faced and overcame obstacles and attitudes
that seem almost incomprehensible now.

There are exceptions to every rule, of course, but everyone I've ever known who
got a D.O. (quite a few of them, including numerous relatives) got it due to
grades.

That's different from your original statement; you made no such
qualifier previously.
