From: Bev-Ann
I've been curious about this too, but only from people who are at their maintenance level. I'm working my way up (at 45g net/day right now) and I'm wondering what my max will end up being? Bev I am in maintenance and stay at 20 - 30 carbs per day, just because this is where it ends up when I avoid all sugar and starches. Marisol 138/126/125 |

Curt,
While I was in the most recent weight loss phase of my diet, which lasted about 9 months, the average daily carb intake over the entire period was 50 grams after deducting fiber. Now that I'm maintaining, I eat between 60 and 100 grams a day. Since I have intense problems with insulin resistance, I now take a drug, Metformin, which controls insulin resistance. Both in my weight loss phase and my maintenance phase I have found that calories are more important than carb level. In fact, I have recently lost a couple pounds eating at a much higher than usual carb level because I have been eating a lot less calories. Very strangely, 6 years into my low carb adventure, I am now experiencing the reverse of what used to happen. When I drop to induction levels (which I did for 2 weeks a month ago) I get extremely hungry and find it impossible to eat at the relatively low calorie level required to maintain my weight at a level much lower than my setpoint. When I eat at much higher carb levels, I am not hungry and can easily forget to eat a meal. In addition, at the higher carb level, I find it easy to avoid eating at night. When I cut back I had a strong urge to eat a lot at night. I don't know if this is a side effect of the Metformin or not, because while eating at induction levels I was not taking Metformin. Whatever the case, what I'm doing is working. I weighed 141 lbs this morning. This is 1 lb less than the 142 at which my weight stabilized a year ago after I went back on hormone therapy. I am meeting my blood sugar targets with the help of medication, and find it amazing to think that I've been tracking carbs now for 5 years. -- Jenny - Low Carbing for 5 years. Below goal for weight. I am probably eating 30-40 carbs this week, but normally I eat on an average of 100 or so. The reason for eating so few right now is because I am trying to get down 10 or whatever. The reason I ask this question is, it seems like many people are really eating low amounts of carbs. Induction levels (20) a day seems to be the norm. Is this true? Just wondering. Curt |

I'm in maintenance and eating 80-90 net carbs per day, except on heavy exercise
days, when I go for about 100-110. It works for me. The funny thing is, I feel like I'm eating *a lot* of carbs. Each day, I have flax flakes for breakfast, 6 or so whole wheat crackers with cheese as a snack, and fruit, and I feel like I'm absolutely pigging out on carbs. Compared to what I ate before, though, this is very low, maybe 1/4 or 1/3 of what I used to eat. Daria 166/under 145/under 145 sugar-free since 2/1/04 low-carb since 2/17/04 |

Thanks Daria. According to the recommendation of my eating plan (Protein
Power), I should end up around 80g net carbs per day too. And I know exactly what you mean about seeming like a lot of carbs. I feel like I'm pigging out on carbs at 45g. I can't even imagine what almost doubling that will be like! I'd be afraid to try and figure out what my pre-LC carb intake used to be. My diet consisted of pasta and pizza. :-) on 25 Sep 2004 14:27:52 GMT, am (DG511) wrote: I'm in maintenance and eating 80-90 net carbs per day, except on heavy exercise days, when I go for about 100-110. Those dealing with diabetes type 2 seem to do best on low range carbs. I
can lose weight at 50 carbs per day, but I actually maintain an average of 27 net carbs per day to help my blood sugar.... Cubit 311/216/165 LC since 12/01/2003 |

Curt I'm eating 20 and 30 per day, with the exception of ONE day, when I carb up, and eat high-fiber grains (read: very whole-grain bread) and higher-glycemic vegetables (read: carrots, beets, that sort of thing). I try to keep to 1500 calories on that day. -- Nancy Howells (don't forget to switch it, and replace the to send mail). |
