Default Goal reached; setting new goal

WOOHOO! I made my goal! :-) As of today, my ' trend weight' is 68 kg. :-)

I didn't realize it earlier, because I've recently reinstalled Windows,
and the decimal dot was a decimal comma again, which means the trend
weight didn't get calculated correctly, because I'd entered it in the
spreadsheet with a dot.

But looking in the mirror I can still see some fat I'd like to get rid
of. What would be a good weight to aim for? The Harvard School of
Nutrition says on
http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritio...e/weight.html: "If your weight
is in the healthy range and isn't more than 10 pounds over what you
weighed when you turned 21, great." Well, when I was around that age, I
weighed 60 kg, and 10 lb is about 4.5 kg. So my new goal is 64 kg; and
since FitDay wants you to give a specific target date, I entered my next
birthday (November 2nd). That means I have to lose 0.4 lb/week, which
ought to be possible.

~300kcal / weekday... just eat for maintenance and go on (brisk) 1hr
walks each weekday!

The beauty of dieting, at least IME, is that the little things add up
(or down!).

Congratulations, Berna! I'm happy dancing for you :-).

I've never heard of basing one's goal weight on one's weight at 21,
but it's an interesting idea. I weigh 8-10 pounds less than I did
then, actually. And I'm sure I have more muscle than I did then. I
looked better then, though :-).

Like you, I ended up deciding I wanted to go a little lower than my
original goal weight. I originally wanted to be at around 145 pounds,
and I revised my goal downward to "in the 130s". I'm generally
staying in the 132-135 range. (I'm just under 5'6", medium to large
frame.) I'm happy with this weight, and it seems to be relatively
easy to maintain given my lifestyle.

That must feel wonderful. At this point, I can't even imagine what
it must feel like to reach goal. I do know that it takes alot of hard
work and dedication, though. I have alot of respect for anyone that can
make it to that point. Congratulations!

That's sorta what I did to set my goal. Around that age, I was
around the 140's, as I remember it. I thought I looked fat then, but
little did I know! But since I know I used to weigh in around there, it
was at least somewhat reasonable to think that I might be able to get
back to that weight.

Sometimes I think to myself that I would like to go lower, but then
most of time I think it will be a miracle if I ever get even under
200. I suppose I'll cross that bridge if and when I ever get to it.

Everything you said here could have been written by me a few years
ago. I also weighed in the low 140s when I was in college, and also
at the time thought I was a little fat. And many times since I became
heavy I reflected on how good I looked at that weight. And I felt
good at that weight when I got there this time around, too.

But, like some others here have reported, I didn't instantly stop
losing when I got to 145. It sort of takes time to figure out how
much to eat to maintain, and in some ways it's also sort of hard to
give up the gratification of seeing changes on the scale. So I lost a
bit more and found I thought it was a good change. But by the time I
got to the low 130s, where I've stayed, I felt that losing more would
be undesirable from both the appearance and strength standpoints.

I also, in the earlier days of dieting, thought it would be pretty
amazing to just get below 200. I didn't really even have a goal
weight until I got close to it -- just figured that any loss would be
a change for the better. Even if I'd only gotten down from 262 to 220
and stayed there, I'd certainly have been healthier and more fit than
when I started. I think sometimes we become too fixated on our
desired end point and forget that every pound lost is a gain in health
and well-being.

That is true, of course. But I don't think I'd have been motivated by a
goal weight of x, where x is still overweight. I visited a Dutch
weightloss site once, where they wouldn't let you enter a loss of more
than 10% of your current weight as a goal. Well, at 100 kg, a loss of 10
kg would have meant I was still *obese*! Yes, maybe a goal like that is
realistic, but it sure as heck isn't inspiring... Yes, of course I could
have adjusted my goal later, but I got so annoyed, I just didn't want to
use that site anymore.

It works only if you were thin when you were that age, of course. I
think 60 kg would be a bit too thin for me, now. Even when I reached my
goal of 62.5 kg with Weight Watchers, back in the Pleistocene, some
people thought I was a little *too* thin. Maybe they were just jealous,
but maybe they had a point.

I always love to hear about people like you, who are maintaining
succesfully. You hear such a lot about people who lose weight and gain
all of it back (and then some, in a lot of cases - like I did after WW),
that it is very reassuring to know that it *can be done*!
