eating the same thing everyday - unhealthy?
well, i'm a lurker but i've finally started induction and i have a question.
i know everyone praises the greatness of food diversity, but is it unhealthy to be eating the same thing every day? the reason i'm asking is because i found a sugar free teriyaki sauce and have been making stir fry with bean sprouts, veggies, and chicken for the last few nights and then having the leftovers for lunch as well. i've basically been eating only that for the last four days, and it's very low in carbs. the question: is this a bad thing? i don't mind the same thing every day. is my body going to be angry at me if i continue eating this one type of meal? i just find it's a lot easier to avoid cheating when i have something so good for me that's always available and delicious. thanks, a. |

So long as you are getting enough nutrients (vitamins, protien, essential fatty acids, and calories) and fiber, then sure you can have the same thing every day. revek |

When I first began low-carbing I had the same things every day for quite a while, an omelette for breakfast, tuna salad on celery for lunch, and caesar salad with chicken breast for supper. This went on for about two months. I discussed this with my doctor and he said it was OK but suggested that I take a good multivitamin daily -- which I did. This was to compensate for possible dietary deficiencies. I've long since broadened out my diet, (no pun intended), but it didn't do any damage that I'm aware of. You are getting your vitamins in your veggies. If you were not eating any veggies (eating only meat products) you may run into problems. In the old days of long ship voyages "scurvy" was a common problem which was combated with fruits and veggies, hence the term "Limeys" which comes from long ago (British I think) sailors who took loads of limes on their sea voyages to battle this vitamin deficiency. As long as your getting your proper share of daily vitamins in food forms and/or daily vitamins you should not have any problems. Chris B. |

Welcome to our group! The reason it's best to vary your diet is to
maximize the amount of vitamins/nutrients your body receives. Had you thought of changing the meat, having beef or fish instead of chicken once in awhile? Varying the veggies; broccoli, green beans, etc. etc. There are many different things to stir fry. Also, make sure the teriyaki sauce, while sugar-free, doesn't have carbs in it. Good luck...and remember to take a multivitamin regardless! |

eating the same thing everyday - unhealthy?
Alexandra Taylor wrote:
i know everyone praises the greatness of food diversity, but is it unhealthy to be eating the same thing every day? No and yes. If you eat a diet that includes all your essential nutrient needs in theory it wouldn't be bad to eat the same thing every day. However, here in the real world, there are several concerns. One is that what the essential nutrients and how much of them you need isn't really known completely yet. So if in four years researchers discover that a diet deficient in Substance X pre-disposes one to cancer and you haven't been eating any Substance X due to your limited diet, you might get a little nervous. Another problem is that unless you're buying completely organic foods, you are being exposed to trace amounts of pesticides, herbicides, hormones and antibiotics from your food supply. Most crops and animals are raised in similar ways, with similar substances. So a carrot grown in New Jersey is likely to have the same herbicide traces that a carrot grown in California has. By eating a widely diverse diet, you avoid concentrating on one set of pesticides, etc. There are other concerns; for instance, a recent study of elderly Japanese men showed that their brains tend to shrink. No one knows for sure why but a high soy diet is implicated. Again, if you eat tofu three times a day, you might start to feel a little nervous about it. the reason i'm asking is because i found a sugar free teriyaki sauce and have been making stir fry with bean sprouts, veggies, and chicken for the last few nights and then having the leftovers for lunch as well. i've basically been eating only that for the last four days, and it's very low in carbs. The saying goes "the poison is in the dose." If you're eating a reasonable amount of the teriyaki sauce, you probably won't experience ill effects unless or until you get bored with it. On the other hand, something like this is easy to vary! Use different meats! Use different veggies! Explore! You might discover that beef with different veggies is even better than the chicken! Try mixing it with mayo or some other thickener and having it as a veggie dip or salad dressing! the question: is this a bad thing? i don't mind the same thing every day. is my body going to be angry at me if i continue eating this one type of meal? Your body, your science experiment. Maybe it will, maybe it won't. The only way to know for sure is to keep eating this way and find out. You're the only one who knows how badly you want to know. Good luck. If that was me, I'd eventually get bored, and probably cheat due
to the lack of anything else in the house. Jake.
