Default Carbs and depression?

So this past month I ate more carbs than usual, don't know exactly how
many, but I had some pretty bad off-plan days. Besides slowing my
weight-loss, I've noticed I just don't feel as good emotionally. I don't
know if it's guilt over cheating on the diet, or an actual physiological
effect from higher carbs, but I feel kinda PMS-ish, mood-wise, and I don't
have PMS since I'm on Depo and my next shot isn't until mid-November. Has
anyone else experienced this down-side to adding more carbs to the diet?
Regardless, I'm getting back on the wagon and going back to strict-mode.

Carbs depress me as well, and the depression seems to coincide with a
certain "brain fog". One possible reason for this is a systemic candida
infection. Candida feeds on fermenting carbs in the lower GT (which is why
carb binges are a very, very bad idea for anybody with this condition) and,
when it gets systemic, even the brain is affected. The best diet to fight
this condition is a combination high alkalyne/low carb diet, which means
lots of green veggies with your protein.

Oh yeah. Every time I go substantially off-plan (which includes the
last few days, which has included several slice of toast and potatoes
at a couple of meals ... sigh).

Carbs bring back that mildly depressed, pressure-in-the-head feeling
for me, as well as fatigue and pain in my muscles and joints. Which is
why today is back-on-the-horse day. Again.

(who could have probably lost the equivilent of three whole people by
now of she didn't slide off-plan so often)

I get the impression that I feel better when I'm on the plan then when I
cheat. I guess part of it could be psychological but when I'm on the plan I
feel like I have more energy too, so maybe it's a little bit of both.

I get depression big-time when I eat too many carbs! In fact my mental state
is usually the thing that pushes me back to really strict LC almost more
than my physical state.

Hiya Luna,
I've had problems with depression for years and it is related to chronic
pain. Since I've been on Atkins and weight training the depression has all
but gone. So I'd say it could be the higher carbs that have made you feel
this way along with the guilt you are feeling. Stop feeling guilty -
remember how long you have been doing Atkins and how well you have done.
You're allowed a few weeks 'off plan'. Just get back into eating correctly
and make up for it that way. Also are you still doing your regular exercise?
I find the endorphins I get after an exercise session to work better than my
pain pills on some days.

The one thing I do know is that when you are feeling depressed or down, and
you are also feeling guilty, then you just make yourself feel worse. Tell
yourself the past few weeks DON'T matter and get back on plan. Think of it
as a holiday or whatever.

Something else, I've got endometriosis and because of that I've been on
every birth control/hormone treatment out there. I found depo provera turned
me into a pms psycho with more mood swings in an hour than I normally have
in a week. I'm glad it has worked the opposite way for you. How long have yo
u been taking it?

Hang in there, and keep your chin up,
Angie

Yeah, I'm still working out, but I did skip some workouts the past month.
Getting back in the swing now and it feels great!

Thanks, I'll do that.

I've been on it almost 2 years now, and I love it. I get mild PMS symptoms
a couple of days before the next shot is due, but it's nothing like the
monthly roller coaster I used to be on. In the old days, I rarely got
bitchy, instead I'd get really weird and weepy. Things like: cutting all
my hair off, staying up all night to make a butterfly costume to wear to
school instead of doing the paper I should have been doing, breaking down
and crying at a party because I devolved into a solipsist fantasy where I
was convinced that no one else in the world actually existed and they were
all figments of my imagination. Since all of these sorts of things only
happened in the week before my period, and the rest of the time I was
fairly normal and balanced, I am convinced it was due to the monthly
vistor. Depo-Provera isn't for every woman, but it's been a godsend for
me.

Hang in there, and keep your chin up,
Angie

I've been depressed for the last 6 years. You get used to it.

Steve

Well, I have suffered from depression off and on, and I must say I
am feeling very good on this WOE. I don't think it is totally
coincidental, although part of it may be that I am actually doing
something about my weight.

I haven't really experimented with carbs to find out, but I rather
think I'm similar - I may find out at Christmas when I have a day off
planned. I do remember when I ate carbs being (for all intents and
purposes) asleep at my desk in the afternoons. I'm much more awake
now, which has to be a break for the British taxpayer.

I also had various kinds of fungal infections which rather makes me
believe that I might have been suffering from candida infection, and
that all seems to have cleared up. On the other hand, today is the
first day on which they've turned the heating on in our building after
the summer, and it's so warm I'm feeling more than a bit tired. But
nothing like I would have been a year ago.

Hi Jean and all,

Funny, I've been contemplating this deeply. I think its a which came
first the chicken or the egg scenario. - - 1) A major symptom of
depression is a feeling of fatigue, exhaustion and low energy. 2)
When you're fatigued, exhausted and don't have much energy you feel
depressed. All in all, lo-carbing (or high proteining if you want to
look at the flip side) has given me a lot of extra energy. - - I have
had some weeks where I had to deal with major life stress and I'd lie
if I didn't see at some points it did get to me... but since being on
Atkins the totally meaningless and decapacitating depressive episodes
I used to get have virtually vanished... Stable blood sugar ?
Excess energy ? Who knows... who cares... I feel great... - - Also,
with the extra energy I have a get out and exercise more, and my own
experience has been, when you're depressed, the more inactive you are,
the worse it gets. Usually if you can just get past the front door
(unless its really severe) it'll let up a bit... - - All in all, I've
also felt a correlation between my moods and carbohydtrate levels.

Eddie
