I'd get some heavier dumbbells too, some 8 and 10 pounders for
starters. You'll find you'll need them within a few weeks. You can
wait for anything heavier for a month or two.

By the way, I also have some old 2-pound hand weights, so if I need to really
ease into some of this stuff (and I imagine I might), I'm ready for that, too.

Two-pound hand weights are really only good for some specialized
exercises, like injured rotator cuffs, and some wrist exercises (if
you have carpal tunnel). I don't even do rotator cuff exercises with 2
pound weights anymore.

You may find that you'll use the 2 pounders in the first few sessions
for regular lifting, but after that you'll "outgrow" them! You should
start where you feel comfortable, but you'll be surprised at how fast
you progress in the beginning.

I'm not a big time weight lifter like some here. I'd like to be, but I
had to carve out a routine that I could do and still be able to take
care of my husband. So my routine is more limited at the moment. Also
until fairly recently, my rotator cuff injuries prevented it.

However, even a modest routine combined with skating and some walking
keeps me toned. And I don't lift anything heavier than a 20 pound
dumbbell at the moment.

Let us know how you progress.

Barbara

I guess we are in this one together beeswing. I drug my old 6 lb
dumbells out from under the bed when Chris posted that initial response
to the OP.

Good Luck!
(Don't hurt anything lol, I'll try not to hurt myself either lol)

the next
several days looking over the ideas and sites you all suggested.

Thanks,

your

Seriously put together a weight routine that will work all your upper
body muscle groups. If you have some heavier weights then you can also
try squats and dead lifts at some point. For starters you want to work
biceps, triceps, and shoulders. You can also work obliques with
dumbbells. You can do abs with plates, but I've never seen it done
with a dumbbell.

That's because you are clueless when it comes to training.

Stick with trying and failing to get that huge lump of fat off your
husband.
