olive oil questions...
I've never used olive oil, but have enjoyed it at restaurants, so last night
I decided to buy some. I was overwhelmed with the choices! I don't really know the difference between extra virgin, blah blah blah. What is the difference? det |

What is the difference? det Extra virgin should be first pressing (the olives are pressed multiple times) and has more Omega 3s. Here are some articles that might help. If you do cook with it, Virgin will hold up to heat much better than Extra Virgin. Extra has a little more flavor, so I tend to use that more in things like salads where I won't be cooking it. I keep a bottle of each on-hand. |

Especially the Extra-virgin olive oil. very low smoke point, use it in
dressings. regular olive oil is OK for grilling, as long as you don't have heat cranked so high the grill is shaking :-) determined wrote: "jmk" wrote in message ... And it's my understanding that olive oil doesn't hold up well to heat - so, no grilling with it? No. I mean grilling is fine. It has a lower smoke point -- starts to smoke at lower temps than some other oils -- but not so low that it's problematic, IMHP. -- jmk in NC |

It's great for coating vegetables for grilling or baking. |

Extra virgin has more flavor. Check your supermarket for the extra
virgin brand that says "for dipping bread" - that's truly yummy on bread and crackers. The extra virgin also has more anti-oxidants. BTW olive oil is heart-friendly and is the basis of the Mediterranean diet. "determined" wrote in message ... I don't really know the difference between extra virgin, blah blah blah. What is the difference? det Olive oil rules this earth. I've cooked with it all my life. Cold Pressed Extra Virgin is best to not cook with, as it will burn first. This is the kind you want to drizzle on salads, raw veggies, etc. Light is good for cooking. Just make sure you're using it with foods that don't need to cook a long time. It's perfect for fish, for example. Martha |
